Transcript of The Distributive Property

The Distributive Property
When you think of the word Distributive what comes to your mind?
Expressions 3(4+2) and 3(4) + 3(2) are equivalent expressions
Use the Distributive Property to write each expressions an an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expressions
The Distributive Property
You can use algebra tiles to investigate
how the Distributive Property relates to algebraic expressions.
Algebra Activity
You can model the Distributive Property by using Algebra tiles
Algebraic Expressions
1. 3(x + 1)
Example 3: Simplify Algebraic Expressions
DISTRIBUTIVE
They are written differently but both have the value of 18

That's what makes them equivalent which means the SAME!
Distributive Property
1) 2(6 + 4)
2) (8 + 3)5
2. (y + 4)5
Example 4: Simplify Expressions with Subtraction
a. 2(x - 1)
b. -3(n - 5)
ThE EnD
Now you try:
1. 2(9 + 1)
2. -6(x - 5)
3. 2(x + 3)
4. 8(y - 2)
