Concepts of Self
Agender to Ze: Exploring Trans* Terminology
"Transgender" in a literal sense means "to cross over gender" and is a term for people whose gender identity does not match the body in which they were born.
The abbreviation "trans*" is used to specify that one is talking about the community umbrella term,
not the identity term.
Trans* vs. Transgender
Gender vs. Sex
What do you want to learn today?
"Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate or inappropriate for people of various sexes. It's also a person's inner sense of self in relation to these roles.
"Sex" refers to the physiological similarities and/or differences between human bodies.
"Gender Expression" is how someone outwardly expresses themselves.
"Biological Sex" is the body someone was born in. Generally we think of this as "male" or "female" be we also need to remember that "intersex" is also an option.
"Sexual Orientation" covers who and what you are attracted to.
"Romantic Orientation" is similar to sexual orientation, but it covers asexual and polyamorous identities.
"Sexual Behavior" is what you actually do with your body and, potentially, with other people's bodies.

Guessing someone's pronouns based on their appearance is a no-no, but asking politely what pronoun someone prefers is ALWAYS a good idea.
In fact, getting in the habit of
asking EVERYONE you meet for
their PGPs is a great idea!
