Transcript of Viva Voce - How Deep is Your Love
You are thinking - What in the WORLD is PSYCHEDELIC ROCK? Psychedelic definition: distortion of perceptions, or in other words, to have hallucinations. Psychedelic rock is a musical style that emerged in the 1960s; rock music inspired by or related to drug-induced experience. Pop rock is a music genre which mixes a catchy pop style, of light lyrics, in its (typically) guitar-based rock songs. Soft rock is a style of music which uses techniques from rock music often combined with elements in folk rock, to create a softer sounding piece. Analysis Overall, disco was the Bee Gees' main style/genre. Songs like "Staying Alive" and "Saturday Night Fever" show the features of this genre. The BeeGees were introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Compare and Contrast The Beatles Elvis Presley By Anika Ng HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE? Analysis The time signature is 4/4 time or C (common) time. This means that there are 4 crotchet beats in a bar. The Beatles has influenced our society just like Picasso... an artist who broke through time constraints of their era to create something original and unique. Pitch The song "How Deep is Your Love" by the Bee Gees is in E flat major. There is no set pattern for the chord progression. However, the Bee Gees used these chords throught their sequences: I, ii,ii7, III, iii7, IV, IV7, iv, V, v, VI7, vi, vi7. ...And to clarify those storms raging in people's heads about roman numerals, the Bee Gees used the keys Eflat, F, G,Aflat, Bflat and C. Structure This piece is based on the song structure.
CODA (the chorus is repeated and fades away) The phrase "Show, How Deep is your love" and "Cause we're living in a world of fools, breaking us down, when they all should let us be. We belong to you and me" is sung in harmony and move together along the melody. Tone Colour • Vocal - 3 voices
• Soft percussion
Instruments The use of these instruments were "strange" for people in that era. Styles like disco were more upbeat and made you want to dance. Time signature A technique has been used in this piece. Syncopation not only allows for interest, but allows for the lines to flow together. Dynamics and expressive techniques The percussion is continuous. It is made up of repetitive quavers played on the hi-hat cymbal. Underneath those quavers, is a beat on beats 2 and 4. The quality of the voices are calm. The Bee Gees use vibrato. It is soft and gets louder slightly just before the chorus and during the chorus. The tempo of the song is at a moderate speed. Duration The introduction note lasts for a long time. The voices have used vibrato. The verses and chorus notes are mainly quavers and legato. Texture General type The beginning of the chorus is sung in harmony and in parallel. The song starts with a chord and makes transitions to other chords. The verses are sung together in one tone. Occasionally, they may sing in octaves. Motion Level of activity Role The piece harmony parts move in parallel and create chords. There are many roles in this piece. The Hi-hat percussion is the rhythm and keeps everything in place. The strings play a counter melody in between and during the verses and chorus. During the chorus, one of the vocalists sing a counter melody. The level of activity is well defined and moves in a melodic and harmonic way. The Beatles The group also incorporated features from classical styles and other elements in innovative ways. The Beatles' style of music was pop and rock, however, there were some influences from the psychedelic style. Elvis Presley Elvis Presley's main genres were rock and rock, rockability, country, pop, blues, gospel and R&B. The Bee Gees imitated Rock and Roll stars like Elvis Presley very successfully. Elvis Presley's songs were more upbeat. For example, contrasted to "Jailhouse Rock", the song had strong percussion and was loud. The Bee Gee's songs were calmer. The Bee Gees were a successful band because they were different and audiences enjoyed their new style of music. Their style of singing was what caused interest. (falsetto and vibrato). The one thing that stood out the most in the Bee Gees music were how lyrical they were. The songs had definite melodies. I hope you enjoyed the presentation! :) Thankyou!
