Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) and Rohypnol ('Roofies')

Jo Schmidt & Marlena Smith

What is GHB?
Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is an illicit chemical that has become a major cause of drug-related comas in the US and other countries
GHB has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier freely and depress consciousness, resulting in euphoria and intoxication. It is also touted on the Internet as a sleep aid, an anti-depressant and weight loss product…but it’s not.

History of GHB
GHB was first known in France 50 years ago as a possible anesthetic, but was rejected by the American medical community because of the side effects.
Resurfaced in 1987 as a possible treatment for sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. Also about the same time, some thought the drug could enhance muscle growth hormone during sleep.
In 1990, after being taken off the market, it became widely used and better known as the date rape drug.
GHB was recently made legal in the U.S. to treat narcolepsy.
Users of Rohypnol and GHB
People who attend raves and dance parties are most common.
Sexual predators use to produce euphoric and uninhibiting effect on their victim, making them easier to take advantage of
Other Users of GHB
Steroid users=most likely to become addicted
Business people who travel, using it as a sleep aid.
How is it used?
GHB can be produced in clear liquid, white powder, tablet, and capsule forms. It is colorless and odorless.
It has a salty taste, but when diluted in a drink it is endetectable.
GHB can be made in homes with recipes and kits found and purchased on the Internet. It can be made from floor cleaner, degreasing solvent and drain cleaner.
How GHB Works in Your Body
The GHB molecule is similar to the neurotransmitter GABA and affects the same receptors that alcohol, opiates and valium do.
The molecules in GHB work by ‘telling’ neurotransmitters not to send, depressing your neural activity and brain activity.
GHB can potentially affect heart rate and breathing and in some cases cause a drop in breathing rate and be fatal.
Taking 100% pure GHB, not mixed with anything, the only overdose effect is restful sleep.
Mixing GHB with alcohol and other drugs is what makes it fatal.
The intensity of drowsiness and depressing of the nervous system are so strong that most people have memory loss while they are affected by the drug. They also have feelings of confusion after waking up.
Roofies are not legal in the U.S. but are in Europe and Mexico How to Avoid 'Date Rape'
At a party, don't accept drinks from strangers or casual aquaintances and drinks you didn't pay for yourself
Drink bottled drinks and watch the person opening it, if it's not you.
Don't leave drinks unattended.
Buddy System!!
Short-Term Effects for GHB and Roofies
start to feel it after 5 to 20 minutes
tremors seizures nausea respiratory problems,
problems seeing black out, sweating
Long-Term Effects for GHB and Roofies
sleep and possible coma or death.
difficulty thinking, amnesia (memory loss)
hallucinations, slurred speech, headaches nausea, What is Rohypnol?
Rohypnol is a type of benzodiazepine that is a sedative. It has approximately ten to twenty times the potency of Valium.
It works the same way in your body as GHB, by shutting down neurotransmitters in the CNS. Street Names
GHB : G, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, liquid ecstasy

Rohypnol: Roofies, roaches, ruffles, LaRoche (after its manufacturer Hoffman-La Roche), R2
Personal Stories Differences and Similarities
Rohypnol and GHB both cause memory loss for at least 12 hours.
Each are undetectable in the body by normal toxicological screens or drug tests. There are sophisticated tests but they must be special ordered.
After 12 hours GHB is completely undetectable in the body. Rohypnol will be detectable for up to 48 hours.
GHB can be used for recreational use besides date rape. While Rohypnol has no other uses for the body except depressing the CNS.
National Drug Threat Survey (NDTS) 2003
Indicates Increasing GHB Availability.
NDTS 2003 data reveal that 20.7 percent of state
and local law enforcement agencies nationwide
report that GHB availability is high or moderate
an increase from 16.4 percent in 2002.
BUT, more than half (59.0%) of state and local law enforcement
agencies report availability as low.
However, the percentage of state and local agencies reporting that GHB is not available in their areas decreased to
15.8 percent in 2003 from 29.6 percent in 2002
