Transcript of The Green River Killer

The Green River Killer
During his adult life Ridgway married three times. Ridgway explains that what drove him to begin killing was when his second wife divorced him. He began killing in 1982 and stopped killing for a period of time because he became very religious during his second marriage. it then became a habit and a excitement for him to kill. His main target were young runaway girls and prostitutes because they were " easy to pick up" and he hated them the most. He also knew that they would not be reported missing right away.
Techniques & Schemes
Ridgway was very clever because he was able to outsmart and confuse the police multiple times. He would dump the bodies into the green river usually nude so that no evidence was left behind. he would also take off any jewelry on the women. Ridgway often used his son to make women think he was unable of harming them. in order to confuse the police he would paint the truck in which he picked up women constantly. another thing he did was was put bodies across state lines in oregon and move the bodies from their original place.
As a child Ridgway is known to have had a troublesome childhood including witnessing his parents argue, his mother belittling him, and not doing so well in school. at the age of 16, ridgway led a 6 year old boy into the woods and later stabbed him near the ribs and as he walked away in laughter he said " i just wanted to know what it would be like to kill someone".
Ted Bundy Helps
after hearing about "the green river killer" ted bundy while in prison offered investigators help. bundy wanted to help the investigators understand the how the mind of a serial killer works. he advised them that the "green river killer" most likely revisits the sites where he hid the bodies and that the sites where ridgway's victims were buried were moving closer to where his home was. This was very useful information to the police & helped them find out that ridgway did go back to the dumpsites where the bodies were hidden.
Life Sentence
Gary Ridgway was arrested on November 30, 2001 almost 20 years after his first murder. He pleaded guilty to all 48 counts of aggravated first degree murder in 2003. he was at first sentenced the death penalty but after an agreement his life would be spared if he helped authorities locate missing bodies. ridgway was sentenced to 48 consecutive life terms on December 18, 2003.
Gary Ridgway also known as "The Green River Killer" was known for committing numerous murders during the 1980's and 1990's. Ridgway was convicted of 48 Murders. Investigators believe he is responsible for 71 of them, although Gary disagrees and claims to have committed at least 90 murders.
