After WW2 Effects after the War Middle of war for France End of war for France With France left to fend for itself after the British evacuation, Germany launched a second operation, Fall Rot (Case Red), which was commenced on June 5. Initially the depleted French forces put up stiff resistance, but German air superiority gradually overwhelmed French artillery positions. On 22 June, an armistice was signed between France and Germany, which resulted in a division of France whereby Germany would occupy the north and west, Italy would control a small Italian occupation zone in the southeast, and an unoccupied zone, the zone libre, would be governed by the newly formed Vichy government led by Marshal Pétain. World War 2 resulted in 50 million to over 73 million deaths. These deaths make World War II by far the deadliest conflict in human history. The goal was to take control of the alps mountain range. Italy invades France in June 1940. Italy fell because Germany over ran Italy. At the end of the war, millions of people were homeless, the European economy had collapsed, and much of the European industrial infrastructure had been destroyed. The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War of World War II. In an effort to replenish and build up their army ranks along the East Front, German Generals proposed conscription service of the Baltic people for service.
