She becomes engaged to Jack and raises Claire's son Aaron as her own, pretending to be his biological mother as part of the Oceanic 6 cover story. Before Sawyer jumped out of the helicopter that would have brought him to safety with her, Sawyer whispered something in Kate's ear, which she will not reveal to Jack. James is a confidence man who was orphaned as a child when his father killed his mother - and himself - after his mother was conned for all their money by a man named Sawyer. All that James knows about the man who conned her is his name, and he adopts the name "Sawyer" for himself, and goes on to con various women for hundreds of thousands of dollars when he is an adult. With Cassidy, one of these women, he has a daughter named Clementine whom he has never met. He travels to Australia to kill the man he believes is the original Sawyer, but he is wrong and kills an innocent man. On the Island, he is initially disliked for his antisocial behaviour and for his practice of nicknaming his fellow survivors, but he becomes romantically involved with Kate and, eventually, friendly with the rest despite his rough personality. When John moves the island and the remaining survivors are launched back into the 1970s, Sawyer joins the Dharma Initiative under the name Jim LaFleur, and he becomes head of security due to his ability to deal with the Hostiles. He falls in love with Juliet, and they are living together three years later. He, Juliet and Kate are evacuated on the Dharma submarine when Daniel alerts Dr. Chang to the "Incident." Although Juliet acts initially as Jack's interrogator when he, Sawyer and Kate are captured, she helps them, escapes and joins the Oceanic 815 crash survivors. She defies Ben's orders to infiltrate the survivors' camp, and she has clear romantic feelings for Jack. She is left behind when the Oceanic Six leave the island, and when the recurring time flashes leave Juliet and the others in the mid-1970s, she becomes a mechanic for the Dharma Initiative and starts a relationship with Sawyer. One day he neglects to push the button, and on this day Flight 815 crashes. The survivors find the hatch and blow it open, and when they take over pushing the button he attempts (unsuccessfully) to escape the island. After he returns to the island, he moves in with the crash survivors. At the start of the third season, Desmond starts seeing flashes of future events, most of them being about Charlie's death. Later, he experiences flashes into the past. He escapes the Island with the Oceanic Six at the end of season four and is reunited with his girlfriend, Penny. They are married and have a baby boy named Charlie. Desmond has various meetings with Eloise Hawking who urges him not to marry Penny Widmore. Being a man of faith, he believes he has a special connection with the island, leading him to clash with man-of-science Jack. Having been "chosen," Locke becomes the leader of the Others at the end of the fourth season. Locke is eventually murdered by Ben shortly after leaving the island. When most of the "Oceanic Six" survivors return to the island, they transport Locke's body with them. Locke apparently returns to life, but this is revealed to be a deception; Locke is still dead, and the individual in Locke's form is actually Jacob's rival. Lapidus Full Name: Vincent

Vincent is Walt's yellow Labrador retriever, who is originally owned by Walt's stepfather, Brian Porter. He is left behind on the Island when Michael and Walt leave. He is given to Shannon by Walt and remains under her care until she is killed. He is later seen accompanying Sun. After the timeshifts and an attack on the survivors, Vincent ends up with Rose and Bernard in 1974. All three make a new home in the jungle and are found three years later by Sawyer, Juliet and Kate. Vincent is the only confirmed survivor on Lost. He is last seen at Jack's side as Jack dies of his wounds. Locke Lost in Unnecessary Censorship Pilot: Part 1

Jack Shephard awakens laid on his back in the jungle, disoriented, battered and bruised, noticing for a fleeting moment a yellow Labrador retriever darting through the bamboo forest. He eases himself up and discovers a small bottle of vodka in his suit pocket. He runs through the jungle vegetation and emerges onto an expansive beach, where he is confronted by the carnage of the airplane crash of Oceanic Flight 815. In the confusion, one survivor gets sucked into a still spinning turbine. Jack, a surgeon, darts from one survivor to the next, organizing them, giving orders and administering medical aid. In a small amount of time, he rescues a man pinned under wreckage, assists the pregnant Claire Littleton (Emilie de Ravin) and enlists Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia) to watch her, and administers CPR to Rose Henderson (L. Scott Caldwell), saving her life.
After the initial shock of the crash passes, Jack retreats to a quiet area beyond the beach to tend to his own minor injuries when he notices Kate Austen watching him. He asks for assistance, which she reluctantly gives by helping suture the wound on his back. During the procedure, Kate reveals that their plane had broken apart in mid-air. Hours later on the beach, while Kate curiously observes Jack tending to a critically-injured unconscious passenger, survivors Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) and his ten-year-old son, Walt Lloyd (Malcolm David Kelley), discuss what to do with the bodies in the wreckage, while an uninterested James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) looks on. Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) organizes a clean-up crew, while Hurley salvages meals from the plane's galley and distributes them to the survivors. Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace) refuses chocolate offered by her brother Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder), believing that rescue is imminent.
That night, the peacefulness of the camp is disturbed by loud roaring noises and crashing trees emanating from the nearby jungle. In the morning, Jack decides that the survivors need to send a distress signal to have any hope of rescue, and he believes the best solution is to use the plane's transceiver, located in the cockpit of the plane. Kate claims to have seen smoke from somewhere within the jungle and asks to come with Jack to find what is hoped to be another part of the plane's wreckage. With Kate and Charlie Pace, Jack sets off into the jungle to find the cockpit. As they move deeper into the jungle, they encounter a sudden rainstorm. When the trio finds the plane, resting against a tree, they are forced to climb through the rows of seats to reach the cabin. Inside, they find the pilot still in his seat. Charlie disappears into the bathroom while Jack and Kate find the pilot (Greg Grunberg) awaking with a start from a concussion. He tells them that the plane had lost radio contact six hours after take off, where it turned back for Fiji and hit turbulence. The plane was a thousand miles off course when it crashed.
Meanwhile, on the beach during the rainstorm, a group of survivors takes refuge in the wreckage. While huddled there, a Korean man, Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim), tells his wife, Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim), in Korean that she should remain close to him at all times. Even though most of the survivors have taken shelter, John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) remains outside and sits alone in the rain on the beach with his arms outstretched and seems to enjoy the moment. Back in the plane's cockpit, the conversation is interrupted when the strange roaring noise that the group heard from the jungle the previous night returns. When the pilot investigates, he is seized by something outside, which drags him through the cockpit window, prompting the trio to grab the transceiver and flee. During the escape, Charlie falls. Jack returns to help him, while a terrified Kate runs on. After the monster disappears, Kate, Charlie and Jack reunite and find the pilot's bloodied corpse suspended in a tree top.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_(Lost)#Part_1 Pilot: Part 2

As Jack, Kate, and Charlie head back to the beach, Kate asks Charlie what he was doing in the bathroom. Charlie says he was being sick, but in a flashback, it is revealed that Charlie had been taking drugs in the bathroom. He had attempted to flush his stash but had been prevented by the sudden onset of turbulence.
On the island, while looking for his dog Vincent, Walt discovers a pair of handcuffs. After he shows Michael the cuffs, Sawyer attacks Sayid, and claims he is a terrorist who blew up the plane. They are soon stopped by Michael and Jack, who had returned from the cockpit. Sayid manages to repair the transceiver, but it does not have a signal and little battery life. While working on it, he reveals to Hurley that he was a communications officer with the Iraqi Republican Guard in the Gulf War. While reading a letter, Sawyer decides to go with Sayid and the group (Kate, Charlie, Shannon and Boone) to bring the transceiver inland in an attempt to reach higher ground and get a better signal. Along the way, they are attacked by a charging polar bear, which Sawyer shoots and kills. When asked about where he found the gun, Sawyer says he took it from a dead U.S. marshal. Sayid accuses Sawyer of being the marshal's prisoner. Kate takes the gun from Sawyer and Sayid instructs her on how to dismantle it.
A flashback shows the final moments of the flight. Kate is talking to the marshal, the same injured man to whom Jack had been tending to on the beach. On the plane, it can be seen that Kate is wearing the handcuffs that Walt found in the jungle. As the turbulence hits, the marshal is knocked unconscious by a falling suitcase. Kate uncuffs herself and puts the marshal's oxygen mask on him before attaching her own, at which point the tail end of the plane suddenly breaks off and falls away.
Back at the beach, the marshal wakes up during the operation and asks Jack, "Where is she?" Inland, Sayid turns on the transceiver and it has a signal. However it is being blocked by a transmission in French that has been repeating for over sixteen years. Shannon translates it: "I'm alone now, on the island alone. Please someone come. The others are dead. It killed them. It killed them all." The group gives each other meaningful looks before Charlie says "Guys, where are we?".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_(Lost)#Part_2 Tabula Rasa

In flashbacks, Kate is in Australia and is awakened by a farmer, Ray Mullen (Nick Tate), who wants to know why she is sleeping in his barn. Using the alias Annie, Kate is offered a job on the farm. When she later leaves the farm, she accepts a ride from Ray to the train station, but learns that he is planning to turn her in to the authorities to claim reward money. When she sees US Marshal Edward Mars (Fredric Lane) driving behind them, she jerks the wheel and causes the vehicle to crash off the road. She loses her chance to escape, however, when she pulls Ray from the burning vehicle.

On the Island
The signal party; Kate Austen, Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews), Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan), James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway), Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) and Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace), return down the mountain, but decide not to tell the others about the French transmission, fearing that the message will cause panic and deprive the survivors of their hopes. When a fight breaks out over who should keep the gun, the others agree to give it to Kate. Upon arriving at the beach, Kate secretly tells Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) about the French transmission.
The group of survivors continue to tend to Marshal Mars. In the process, Jack and Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia) learn about Kate's past as a convict and fugitive. The Marshal's moans of pain have an effect on the other survivors, who believe that Jack is unable to save him. He tells Jack that he wants to speak with Kate, to find out about the favor she tried to request on the plane before it broke apart. While Kate is in the tent, Hurley reveals to Jack that he had seen her with a gun earlier. Jack sees Kate leave the tent, followed by a gunshot from inside; Sawyer then walks out from the tent. He explains that he shot the Marshal in the chest, aiming for his heart, as an act of kindness. However, it is revealed that he missed, piercing the Marshal's lung instead, and leaving him in even more pain. Jack says that it will take hours for the wound to bleed out and throws an extremely shaken Sawyer out of the tent. After the sound of a struggle from within the tent, Jack emerges looking distant and upset. He walks by Sawyer without saying a word. It is implied that Jack was forced to suffocate the Marshal in order to end his suffering.
Elsewhere, Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) asks his son Walt Lloyd (Malcolm David Kelley) about his conversation with John Locke (Terry O'Quinn). Walt tells Michael that Locke believes a miracle happened on the island; Michael then instructs his son to stay away from Locke. Michael searches for Walt's dog Vincent (Madison) in the jungle. However, loud roaring causes him to panic and he flees, stumbling across a topless Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim) washing herself. Both embarrassed, Michael shields his eyes and mutters awkward apologies. Locke eventually finds Vincent using a dog whistle that he made; however, he leaves it to Michael to return Vincent to Walt, saying that he thinks Walt's father should be the one to find the dog.
Kate offers to tell Jack what her crime was. However, he declines, grimly stating that their past lives aren't important and that they all died when their plane crashed.
The episode ends with shots of the main cast, seemingly more hopeful and optimistic, ending with the mysterious Locke staring darkly at Walt and Michael, as "Wash Away" by Joe Purdy plays.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabula_Rasa_(Lost) Walkabout

John Locke is shown working in an office building for a box company. He has a cruel manager named Randy Nations (Billy Ray Gallion) who is constantly taunting and demeaning Locke. At one point Locke tells Randy off and feels great about it.
Locke is then shown in Australia talking to one of the leaders of a walkabout. He refuses to let Locke come because of his condition, saying it is too big of a risk for the insurance company. As the man gets up to leave, Locke is shown to be using a wheelchair.

On the Island
When boars raid the body-filled fuselage, Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) decides it has to be burned. Four days after the crash the survivors discover that their food is exhausted, and wonder what to do. Locke reveals the many hunting knives he possesses and suggests they should hunt boar in the jungle, and he, Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) and Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) set out to do so. Michael first enlists Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim) to look after his son Walt Lloyd (Malcolm David Kelley) until he returns. Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) gives Kate an antenna to set up in order to triangulate the signal of the French Transmission.
While hunting the boar, Locke makes hand signals for Kate and Michael to keep silent, but Michael, confused, says he doesn't understand, attracting the attention of a boar, who charges. Michael barely jumps out of the way, getting his leg gashed. Kate aids Michael, and starts leading him to the beach, but Locke goes on his own, telling Kate not to "tell [him] what he can and can't do" when she objects. Walking towards the beach, Kate and Michael stop so that Kate can climb in a tree to put the antenna up. As she climbs up, she is startled, dropping the antenna, by the monster moving towards Locke's position. For a moment, the monster's point of view is shown as it moves towards Locke, towering over him, both making visual contact.
Michael and Kate return to camp. Sayid is angry that Kate broke the antenna. When she goes to tell Jack about Locke, Jack sees a man in a suit (John Terry) walk into the jungle. Jack chases after him and Kate follows, but he disappears. They find Locke covered with blood from a wild boar he has just slain.
That night, Claire holds a memorial service for the dead passengers using information she found in their passports, wallets, and luggage. Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) takes a hit of heroin before attending; his stash is running low. Jack is not among the group. Michael, who is standing next to Locke, asks him if he saw anything out there. Locke simply replies "no". Locke watches his wheelchair in a fire and he smiles as it burns.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walkabout_(Lost) White Rabbit

A young Jack (John O'Hara) and a friend are being beaten up. One bully gives Jack the chance to leave, but he decides to help his companion, causing him to be further assaulted. When Jack's father (John Terry) sees his son's beaten face, he tells Jack he shouldn't be a hero because "he doesn’t have what it takes."
Many years later, Jack's mother (Veronica Hamel) tells him that his father has left for Australia. She wants him to bring his father back and Jack reluctantly agrees. Jack flies to Australia and while searching the hotel at which his father was staying, the manager informs Jack that his father has not slept at the hotel for several days following an incident at a bar.
Jack is shown at the morgue, where the coroner tells Jack that his father died of alcohol poisoning. Jack identifies the body and prepares to fly his father's body back home. While at the airport, the airline refuses to put his father's body on the plane because he does not have the proper documentation.

On the Island
Joanna, one of the crash survivors, is drowning in the ocean. Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) swims out but can't reach her, and Jack rescues Boone. Jack is distraught that he failed to save her and sees the mysterious man in a suit again.
Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia) and Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) want Jack to decide how to handle the lack of water. On the island Jack once more sees the man in the suit, and chases him. He catches up and discovers it's his father. Frightened, he calls out "Dad?" to the man, who silently turns and walks away.
Jack deliriously stumbles through the jungle looking for his father. On the island, Jack falls off a precipice while running after his 'father'. He hangs on to a branch, but cannot climb up. Fortunately, Locke appears and helps him up.
Locke tells Jack that the others need a leader, and it should be him. Jack reveals that his father is a hallucination. Locke claims the island is "special," and everything that happens on it does so for a reason. He says, "I looked into the eye of this island and what I saw was beautiful." They split up; Locke looks for water and instructs Jack to follow his hallucination, saying "You need to finish what you started."
That night, Jack discovers caves with an abundance of fresh water. More wreckage from the plane is at the caves, including a coffin. Jack opens the coffin to find it empty, and angrily destroys it.
Jack appears and tells everyone about the caves, telling them they need to work together; introducing the show's well-known phrase "live together, die alone."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rabbit_(Lost) House of the Rising Sun

Sun is at a party. Jin, a waiter, passes Sun a note telling her to meet him in private. Sun wants to run away with Jin to America, but he insists they honorably tell her father that they are seeing each other. Jin returns from talking to Sun's father, who approves of their relationship as long as Jin takes a job working for him. One night after they're married, Jin returns home covered in someone else's blood. Sun is angry that he refuses to speak of it to her and slaps him. He tells Sun that he does whatever her father tells him to do. A few years later, Sun secretly plots to leave Jin and her father, so she will be free to go wherever she wants. However, she does not go through with her plans as he expresses a loving gesture to her, and boards the doomed flight with her husband.

On the island
Jack, Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly), Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) and John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) go to the caves to gather water and investigate.
Sun is shocked to see Jin attack Michael on the beach for no apparent reason. Sawyer and Sayid manage to subdue and handcuff Jin to the wreckage. Michael says the attack was racially motivated, which he later tells Walt Lloyd (Malcolm David Kelley) is not true. At the caves, the away team discovers two bodies, whom Locke dubs "Adam and Eve". The identities of the skeletons are not revealed until the season six episode "Across the Sea". From the deterioration of their clothes Jack estimates that they have been dead for at least 40–50 years, and finds a pouch on them containing two stones: one black, the other white.
At the beach, Jin tells Sun that Michael has her father's watch. Locke and Charlie are clearing the wreckage at the caves and Locke tells Charlie he recognizes him from DriveSHAFT. Charlie is relieved that finally someone, other than Kate, is familiar with his musical background.
Jack and Kate return to the beach and Jack starts talking to people about moving to the caves. The castaways argue whether to stay on the beach where a rescue party could see them (and keep the signal fire burning), or move to the caves, where there is more shelter and fresh water. The group splits into two camps accordingly: Jack, Locke, Charlie, Hurley, Jin, and Sun move to the caves while Kate, Sawyer, Sayid, Michael, Walt, Shannon, and Boone remain on the beach.
Sun finds Michael alone, and in perfect, unbroken English says, "I need to talk to you." Michael is shocked that she speaks English. Sun tells him that Jin is unaware of this. She explains that Jin angrily attacked Michael because of the watch he's wearing, which belongs to her father. Michael says he just found it in the wreckage and it's nothing important.
At the caves, Locke tells Charlie that he knows Charlie is addicted to heroin. Locke says if Charlie gives up his drugs, the island will give him his guitar, which he misses deeply. Charlie hands over the heroin, Locke shows him where the guitar is, and Charlie is ecstatic. On the beach, Kate refuses to go with Jack to the caves. Michael menacingly approaches Jin with an axe, throws the watch at him, and shouts that the fight over the watch "is ridiculous, because time doesn't matter on a damn island." As Michael cuts Jin free of his handcuffs, one of the cuffs remains on his wrist, and Michael tells Jin to stay away from him and Walt.
That night at the caves, Charlie plays his guitar as Jack returns with people from the beach.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_the_Rising_Sun_(Lost) The Moth

Charlie is in church confessing his sins. He comes out of confession and sees his older brother, Liam Pace (Neil Hopkins), who tells Charlie that DriveShaft has a recording contract.
Charlie doesn’t want to sign the record contract because he has qualms about the sex and drugs the band engages in. Liam talks him into signing, promising that Charlie can quit any time he's had enough. One evening at a show, Liam starts singing the chorus to "You All Everybody", which is supposed to be sung by Charlie. He yells at Liam after the show, but Liam reassures him it won't happen again.
Another flashback shows Charlie finding Liam high on heroin with groupies. Charlie kicks them out, and tells Liam that he's done with the band. Liam says no, which causes Charlie to use heroin for the first time. Years later, Charlie visits Liam's house in Australia and wants him to rejoin DriveSHAFT for their comeback tour. Liam refuses, but the band can't do the tour without him. He criticizes Charlie for still using drugs, and Charlie blames Liam for getting him started with drugs. Liam asks him to stay with him for a few weeks, saying that Sydney has some really good rehab programs and that he can get him help. Charlie angrily leaves, and says he has a plane to catch.

On the Island
Charlie is suffering from heroin withdrawal since John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) took his stash in the previous episode, and is chased by a boar as he is walking in the jungle. Locke traps the boar and thanks Charlie for being bait. Charlie asks Locke for the heroin that Locke has taken from him earlier. Locke says that he'll give Charlie the drugs the third time he asks.
Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews), Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) and Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) attempt to triangulate the French transmission. At the caves, Charlie searches through Jack Shephard's (Matthew Fox) medicine for something to replace his heroin. When Jack catches him, Charlie says he has a headache and wants aspirin.
When Jack upsets Charlie by telling him to move his luggage, Charlie confronts him in a cave. Charlie's shouting causes the entrance to the cave to collapse. Charlie escapes, but Jack is trapped inside.
Using his construction experience, Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) leads the rescue attempt with Steve (Christian Bowman) and Scott (Dustin Watchman). In the jungle, James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) goes to tell Kate about Jack's predicament, but decides against it because he doesn't like Kate's attitude. Charlie tells Locke about Jack being trapped. Charlie asks for his drugs a second time, so Locke shows him a moth cocoon. Locke explains that he could help the moth by slitting the cocoon, but it would not survive. Instead, the moth needs to struggle to break free. Nature and struggle make people stronger, Locke says, indicating to Charlie that he needs to fight through his suffering.
Kate and Sawyer stay at the second triangulation point, while Sayid goes to the third. Sawyer tells Kate about Jack's situation, and she runs back to the caves. Charlie squeezes through an opening at the cave and finds Jack.
Charlie finds Jack inside the cave with a dislocated shoulder and apologizes for the way he acted. Jack tells Charlie to pop his shoulder back in place, which he hesitantly does. Just when they think they are going to run out of air soon and while Kate desperately tries to dig them out, Charlie sees a moth which leads him to an opening and they dig out of the cave. Jack confronts Charlie about using drugs, and reassures him that it'll be okay.
Sayid sets off his bottle rocket to signal the antennae power up process. Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace) sets off Boone's rocket from the beach, as Boone had gone to help rescue Jack, as does Sawyer from his location. Sayid turns on the transceiver, but before he is able to triangulate the signal, an unseen person knocks Sayid out.
Charlie asks Locke for his heroin and he gives it back. He looks at it for a moment before tossing it into the fire, smiling. Charlie and Locke see a moth flying away.

Sawyer is sleeping with a woman, Jessica (Kristin Richardson). He gets out of bed suddenly when she informs him of the time and he realizes that he is late for a meeting. He gets dressed and reaches for his suitcase which pops open and money falls out, shocking Jessica. He then tells her that she wasn't supposed to see that. After informing her that he is meeting someone to get money for an investment that will triple his cash in two weeks, Jessica tells him that she will get the money from her husband so that she and Sawyer can split the profit. Later, Sawyer is revealed to be a con artist. He is having lunch with Jessica and her husband, where they agree to invest with Sawyer. He closes the deal with Jessica and husband at their home. However, after seeing their son, Sawyer calls the deal off and leaves.

On the Island
Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) is bringing fruit to the camp when she comes across Sawyer's clothes on the beach. She picks up the book that he's been reading (Watership Down) when Sawyer walks out from the water. He flirts with her but she walks away.
On the island, Sawyer catches Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) rifling through his stash. Later, Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace) brings a bloody Boone to the caves, claiming Sawyer beat him, while Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) reports his failure in triangulating the signal, and the destruction of the transceiver by his attacker. Jack confronts Sawyer, who doesn't give any answers.
Shannon's asthma becomes a problem, and everyone becomes convinced that Sawyer is hoarding some inhalers from the wreck. Sawyer says he'll give up the medicine if Kate kisses him. Kate calls his bluff and challenges him about the letter he often reads and how he is obviously affected by its text. Sawyer makes Kate read the letter aloud. It's addressed to Mr. Sawyer. The author says Sawyer slept with his mother and stole his father's money, causing the father to murder his mother and then kill himself. The author says he’ll find Sawyer and give him the letter, indicating he knows what Sawyer did to the author’s family.
John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) begins to question Sayid about being knocked out the day before and ruining a chance of rescue. Locke suggests that Sawyer may have attacked him because he is benefiting from being lost. Sayid then uses the whereabouts of the inhalers as an excuse to torture Sawyer for information, Jack helps Sayid knock Sawyer out and tie him up in the bamboo thicket. After Sayid slips pieces of bamboo under his fingernails, Sawyer only agrees to give up the inhalers in return for a kiss from Kate. She kisses Sawyer, after which he reveals that he doesn't have them after all. Kate angrily slaps him and reports to Sayid and Jack. Sayid believes Sawyer is lying, and they fight. Sayid stabs Sawyer in the upper arm with Locke's knife.
Sawyer wakes up on the island to find his arm bandaged, having been saved by Jack. Kate has been rereading Sawyer's letter. She sees the stamp on it from 1976, and deduces that the letter wasn't written to Sawyer, but by him. Sawyer tells Kate about life and his flashback. He tried to hunt down and kill the real Sawyer and entered the confidence trade in order to track him. When he saw that boy on that one con, he says he realized he had become the man he was hunting, and that he then took the alias Sawyer. He snatches the letter from Kate and tells her not to feel sorry for him and to leave.
Despite pleas from Kate, Sayid sets off to explore the island's shoreline in self-imposed isolation, needing time to come to terms with his actions in torturing Sawyer, while Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim) helps Shannon by making a eucalyptus salve to clear her bronchial passages. Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) convinces Claire Littleton (Emilie de Ravin) to move to the caves. Sawyer attempts to burn the letter he wrote, but he finds himself unable to go through with it.

Sawyer eventually meets "Tom Sawyer" in the Season 3 episode "The Brig" where it is revealed that this man is Anthony Cooper, also the father of Locke. Sawyer then makes Cooper a.k.a Tom Sawyer read the letter he wrote as a boy, before strangling him to death.
It is revealed in the Season 5 Finale episode "The Incident" that Sawyer wrote the letter, aged 8, after his parents' funeral. The pen he used to write the letter was given to him by Jacob.

Sayid is torturing a prisoner who will not answer his questions. When he steps outside, he recognizes a new prisoner. He is then instructed to torture her until she answers his questions. Sayid discovers that the woman is Nadia (Andrea Gabriel), a childhood friend. She reveals that she has been tortured before, and nothing Sayid does will persuade her to talk. Sayid's superior tells him to execute Nadia. He cuffs Nadia and puts a hood over her head. When they are alone he frees her and tells her how to escape. His superior finds and attempts to kill them both but Sayid fatally shoots him. Nadia first thinks that he will have to leave with her now but he instead shoots himself in the leg and tells her to leave as reinforcements arrive, making it appear as if Nadia shot Sayid and the other officer to escape.

On the Island
Sayid finds a mysterious cable running out of the ocean and into the jungle. When it was first discovered, it was slightly damaged, revealing wires within it. While following it, Sayid is caught in a trap. He is suspended upside down and recites the Shahadah. A mysterious French woman (Mira Furlan) cuts him down and ties him to a bed in a bunker. She asks where Alex is, but when Sayid says he does not know, she shocks him with electricity using batteries and a cable. Sayid tells his torturer his story and about the French transmission. The torturer then identifies herself as Danielle Rousseau, the person who sent out the distress signal. Danielle finds a picture of a woman among Sayid's possessions, and he identifies her as Nadia.
At camp, everyone is stressed. John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) and his new hunting companion, Ethan Rom (William Mapother), give some newly found luggage to Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia). He looks through it and finds golf clubs. The next morning, Hurley builds a golf course to improve morale among the survivors.
Rousseau asks Sayid about Nadia, and he says that she is dead because of him. Rousseau shows Sayid a broken music box, and he tells her he will fix it. Rousseau reveals that she was part of a science team, and they crashed on the island about three days from Tahiti. She identifies the Others as the carriers of a sickness that her companions caught, and says that the Others whisper in the jungle. Sayid doesn't believe her, but continues to fix the music box. After he is finished, he asks Rousseau to let him go. They hear a growl outside, and Rousseau pursues it, leaving Sayid alone.
Sayid escapes from Rousseau's bunker while she is gone, grabbing a rifle and notes she made about the island. Rousseau finds him and they have a standoff; he fires the rifle, but nothing happens. Rousseau says she removed the firing pin, and Robert, her deceased husband, made the same mistake before she killed him. She then reveals that it was she who killed her team, under the motive of stopping the disease from reaching the outside world. Sayid talks Rousseau into letting him go, but before he leaves, he asks about Alex. Rousseau says that Alex was her child. While trying to find his way back to camp, Sayid hears the whispering Rousseau told him about.

Claire takes a pregnancy test with the assistance of her boyfriend, Thomas (Keir O'Donnell), and it's positive. Thomas reassures her that everything will be fine and they'll be good parents. Claire goes to a psychic, Richard Malkin (Nick Jameson), who knows she's pregnant, but becomes upset and refuses to tell Claire what he "saw". One day when Thomas comes home, he tells Claire he's leaving her, saying that he's not ready for the responsibility. Claire returns to the psychic and asks him for another reading. He automatically knows that Thomas left her and warns her that what he sees may not be pleasant. He says that Claire must raise the baby by herself, and that if it is parented by anyone else it will be in danger. The psychic repeatedly calls Claire, and she tells him she's going to an adoptive services agency. Claire is about to sign papers so a married couple could adopt her baby. However, none of the pens she tries works. After thinking it over, she walks out on the adoption agency, and goes to the psychic. He gives her $6,000 and a ticket on Flight 815 and says a couple in Los Angeles will adopt the baby and give her an additional $6,000. Initially Claire is skeptical about giving her child to complete strangers in Los Angeles, but the psychic assures her 'They're not strangers, they're good people'. Even though Claire finds this change of heart suspicious she accepts.

On the Island
Claire Littleton wakes up from dreams screaming two nights in a row. In the first, Claire wakes to find herself no longer pregnant. She walks into the forest and encounters John Locke at a table, playing cards with black and white chequered cards. She asks, "What's happening?" Locke tells her, "You know what's happening." She is asking him why he is there, but Locke interrupts, telling her "It was your responsibility, but you gave him away, Claire, everyone pays the price now." He looks up with one white and black eye. She hears crying and goes to a baby crib. After unfolding several layers of material she dips her hands into a pool of blood and then wakes screaming and has injured her hands digging her nails deeply into her palms. In the second dream, someone holds her down and injects something into her stomach, however, she has no wound. This attack persuades Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia) to take a census of the survivors to have a clear idea of who is actually on the island.
While conducting his census, Hurley talks to Ethan Rom (William Mapother), who seems concerned about giving his information to Hurley. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) suggests to Claire that she wasn't attacked and offers her a sedative. Claire angrily leaves the caves to move to the beach.
Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) tells Hurley that Sawyer has the flight manifest, and that could help him take the census. Sawyer surprisingly gives it to Hurley without any objection. While Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) is trying to help Claire move back to the beach, she starts having contractions. Charlie says he can deliver the baby, but after he accidentally confesses to Claire that he's a recovering drug addict, she yells at him to get Jack, which leaves her alone in the jungle.
Charlie finds Ethan and tells him that Claire is in labor and to get Jack. Charlie goes back to comfort Claire, who tells him the story about the psychic. Charlie suggests that the psychic knew the flight was going to crash, and this was his way of forcing Claire to raise the baby by herself. Claire stops having contractions.
A badly wounded Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) returns to camp and tells the others about Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan), and that other people are on the island besides the plane survivors. Locke looks on from the shadows with his arms crossed. Just as Hurley reveals to Jack that one of the survivors is not listed on the flight manifest, Claire's contractions begin to calm down. They are then met by Ethan, who looks on ominously.

Jack is operating on a woman. Despite his attempts, the woman's heartbeat shows as a flatline; Jack begins giving CPR even though it is clearly hopeless. His father, Dr. Christian Shephard (John Terry), who was originally performing the operation, steps out of the shadows of the OR and tells him to call the time of death. Jack gives him a look and coldly tells him to do it. Christian requests that Jack sign a form which will officially state that the woman's death was an accident. Jack knows that Christian was drinking before he operated on the woman. Christian also says that if the hospital board finds out, it will end his career, and his "life." After his father compliments his talents and begs for the favor, Jack signs the form. Jack is heading down a hospital hallway when he sees his father talking to a man. He asks a nurse who the man is and she tells him that it's the husband of the deceased patient and is threatening to sue. Jack looks on at them from the other end of the hallway, deep in thought, as his father comforts the widower who starts to break down and cry. At a board meeting, Christian delivers his false statement while Jack looks on. The board reveals that the deceased woman was pregnant, which Christian admits to knowing previously (unbeknownst to Jack). Horrified, Jack tells the board that his father was operating under the influence of alcohol, and says that this impaired his judgment and led to the chain of events causing the woman's death.

On the Island
At the caves, Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia) continues trying to explain that one survivor, Ethan Rom (William Mapother), is not listed in the passenger manifest. Jack Shephard asks where Ethan is and Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) says that he went into the jungle to get some wood. Jack then begins asking where Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) is; John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) replies that he went after Claire Littleton (Emilie de Ravin). As Jack and Locke run through the jungle in search of Charlie, they find three distinct sets of footprints, and realize that Charlie and Claire have been taken. As Jack begins shouting their names, Locke motions for him to be quiet.
Locke suggests that they should go back and return with a hunting party, but Jack decides to start off alone.
Back on the island, Jack, Kate, Locke, and Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) set off to find their companions. Following footprints, the group eventually finds one of Charlie's knuckle bandages. Jack and Kate go off to trail Charlie, while Locke and Boone continue on the original trail.
During a rainstorm, Jack and Kate become separated when Jack tumbles down an embankment after hearing what could be Claire screaming. When he comes to at the bottom, Ethan confronts him, warning that if they don't stop following him, he'll kill either Claire or Charlie. A struggle ensues between the two with the mysterious outsider Ethan getting the upper hand, beating and knocking Jack down, who hears Ethan say "No more warnings" before blacking out.
Kate soon comes to Jack's aid and tries to discourage Jack from continuing on with the rain having washed away any remains of the trail but he gets up and keeps going, saying that "I'm not letting him do this...not again" with Kate running after him.
Jack and Kate follow Ethan's path once more until they come across Charlie, blindfolded and hanging by his neck from a tree branch. They cut him down, and Jack furiously performs CPR—despite Kate's pleas that it's a lost cause, Jack does not give up. Charlie eventually comes back to life after Jack helps him.
At nightfall, with Jack, Kate, and Charlie back at the caves, Charlie reveals that it was Claire that Ethan had wanted all along. Boone and Locke are somewhere in the jungle still searching in the rain, where they discover a piece of metal embedded in the ground. The metal appears to be hollow, and they begin removing mud to find out what it is.

Kate is in New Mexico, applying for a loan at a bank using an alias ("Maggie", "Meg", "Miss Ryan"). Three masked men with guns enter and attempt to rob the bank. Kate is thrust to the floor in the chaos. A man tells Kate that they can stop them before he grabs and disarms one. Kate grabs the gun but when the man tells her to shoot the thief she claims that she can't use a gun. One of the thieves pulls Kate into a back room after the situation is handled and they share a kiss, revealing that Kate is a part of the robbery. The man hits Kate to make it look as if she's an innocent civilian, and threatens to kill her unless the manager takes them to the cash vaults. In the back, one of the robbers tells the manager that the whole robbery was Kate's idea. However, she shoots the felons and tells the manager to open the safety deposit box #815—the true reason for the robbery.

On the Island
While swimming near a waterfall, Kate Austen and James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) find a locked halliburton suitcase among some sunken wreckage. Kate wants it, but refuses to tell Sawyer what's inside, so he takes it. At the beach, the tide is rising and will soon submerge the fuselage. Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace) asks her stepbrother, Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder), what he and John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) do every day when they go out into the jungle, and Boone replies that they're looking for Claire Littleton, who has been kidnapped by the mysterious Ethan Rom (William Mapother).[1] While Shannon complains that Boone should locate food, Boone gets upset; in retaliation he calls her "useless."
Kate looks around and enters Sawyer's tent while he's sleeping in an attempt to retrieve the case they found earlier. He wakes up, however, and they struggle, all the while Sawyer playfully flirting with her until he takes back the case and refuses to give it to her, resulting in Kate leaving.
Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) asks Shannon to help him translate Danielle Rousseau's (Mira Furlan) French notes. She asks if Boone put him up to asking her for help because of Boone's earlier comment. Rose Henderson (L. Scott Caldwell) comforts Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) by telling him that what happened to Claire isn't his fault and that he did everything he could. Sawyer tries to pick the lock on the case, but Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) tells him the only way to open it is with pure force. Sawyer drops the case off a cliff, and it still doesn't open. Kate steals it from him, but Sawyer pins her hands down and gets it back. He tells her that he will give the case to her if she tells him what's inside. She refuses.
Kate goes to Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) and says the case contains weapons. It belonged to the U.S. Marshal (Fredric Lane) that was escorting her to the United States[2] and the key is buried with him. They dig up the body and Kate pulls out his wallet. Before giving it to Jack, she palms the key, but he catches her.
Sayid becomes impatient with Shannon when her translations do not make any sense. Upset, Shannon runs away, saying that she's useless. Jack gives Sawyer an ultimatum: if he does not hand over the case, Jack will stop giving him antibiotics for his knife wound. Afraid of getting an infection in his wound, Sawyer hands over the case.
At the caves, Jack and Kate open the case. There are guns inside, and a manila envelope, which Jack gives to Kate. She opens it and pulls out a toy airplane. When pressured, Kate says it belonged to the man she loved - and killed.[3] She then cries, but receives no sympathy from Jack.
Rose tells Charlie that she believes her husband, Bernard Nadler (Sam Anderson), who was in the tail section of the plane when it crashed, is still alive. Charlie, distraught, begs Rose for help, and she prays with him. Shannon recognizes Rousseau's notes as "La Mer" (the original French version of "Beyond the Sea"), which featured in a French-dubbed animated film (though not named, the film is Finding Nemo, which features the song over its credits). By her campfire, Kate stares at the toy plane.

Shannon calls Boone and, after he overhears sounds of violence, asks him to come to Sydney. When he gets there, he sees that her boyfriend, Bryan (Charles Mesure), has been beating her. Boone reports this to the police, and reveals that Shannon is his stepsister. While Boone is speaking to the officer, James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) is brought to the station handcuffed shouting in anger. The detective ignores Boone. Boone offers Bryan $25,000 to break up with Shannon but Bryan asks for $50,000 and Boone agrees. Boone also reveals that Bryan is not the first man he has paid off to leave Shannon alone. Shannon refuses to leave with Boone. He realizes that Shannon lied to him to get the money, and she has done this all the other times he had to pay off her boyfriends. Bryan says that Boone's mother stole money away from her, and she is getting what is rightfully hers. After a brief fight with Bryan in which he is beaten, Boone leaves. That night, a drunk Shannon comes to Boone's hotel room and tells him that Bryan stole the money. She tells Boone that she knows he loves her and, although he first tries to refuse her advances, they sleep together. Later, Shannon persuades Boone not to tell their parents.

On the Island
Boone sees that Shannon Rutherford's (Maggie Grace) relationship with Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) is getting more personal. He tries to tell Sayid that he would be better off staying away from Shannon, but he is ignored.
Boone and Locke have been trying to open the mysterious hatch, but tell the other survivors they are hunting for boar. Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia) scolds Boone for not bringing back any boar, but John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) tells Boone that what he and Boone are doing with the hatch is far more important than hunting. At the hatch, Locke makes a paste and tells Boone it is for later. Locke suggests that staring at the hatch will tell them how to open it.
Boone admits to Locke that he is tired of lying, and wants to tell Shannon about the hatch. Locke reluctantly agrees but as Boone leaves Locke knocks him unconscious with the handle of his knife. Boone awakes to find himself tied up in a position from which it is apparently impossible to break free. Locke applies a strange paste on Boone's head wound from when he was knocked out and leaves a knife embedded in the ground in front of Boone so he'll be able to free himself. Locke explains that he will be able to reach it once he is properly motivated. After several unsuccessful attempts to do so, Boone hears Shannon's screams and the sounds of the 'monster' approaching. This is the impetus he needs, and after a short struggle, and in excruciating pain, he is finally able to reach the weapon. He then frees himself and searches for his sister.
Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) shows Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) to a garden that Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim) has started. Kate discovers that Sun speaks English when the two are working in the garden, and Sun asks her not to tell anyone. Sun took English lessons in Korea, but doesn't want Jin to know.[1] Locke finds Sayid trying to make sense of Danielle Rousseau's (Mira Furlan) maps, and gives him a compass.
Sayid tells Jack that according to Locke's compass, north is not where it should be, causing him to believe that the instrument is defective. Jack finds Locke and asks him about Boone. Locke says he hasn't seen his acolyte all day, and the boars are migrating outside of their valley. Hurley and Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim) spend the day fishing. After Hurley fails to catch anything and accidentally steps on a sea urchin after giving up, Hurley asks Jin to urinate on his foot but doesn't, later Jin gives him a fish out of sympathy.
Boone runs through the jungle, and locates Shannon tied from head to toe to a tree. She screams for Boone, telling him to untie her. This he does, and they run through the jungle together, away from the Monster. Boone tells Shannon about the hatch right before the Monster attacks them again, this time while they are hiding in a clump of trees. It takes Shannon, and the distraught Boone runs through the jungle searching helplessly. He later finds her mutilated body by a creek and watches her die. That night Boone returns to the camp and tries to kill Locke, screaming that he had killed his sister, but Locke reveals that Shannon is alive. The paste caused Boone to have a vision that, according to Locke, is crucial to his experience on the island. Boone says seeing Shannon dead made him feel relieved. Locke says to come with him, and the two disappear into the jungle.
