Edgar Allan Poe
Became an orphan on his 3rd birhtday .
His father, David, was a heavy alcoholic , and his mother, Elizabeth died on a tour
At 17, he entered the University of Virginia. Soon after he was withdrawn
In 1827, he published a volume of poems called Tamerlane.
Entered the army.
Received his 1st recognition as a writer from publishing Aaraaf.
Poe married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia.
He soon disappeared after and was found in a Baltimore tavern.
Four days later he died.
The theme to this story is fear. This theme is expressed through the narrators quotes and actions. How we all come to the realization that we all have fear and we eventually have to come to grips with them and face them. Even though the story is just a memory he must live with that memory and fears.
A man who is sentenced to death by three judges
He goes in and out of consciousness and finds himself in a cell
He explores the cell and soon after knocks out again
Wakes up and discovers a pit beneath his face
Makes his way back to where he used to be
Falls unconscious again and wakes up tied to the pendulum
Frees himself from the pendulum only to be threatened by death once more.

“The Pit and the Pendulum” takes place during the last days of the Spanish Inquisition (1478–1834). The Inquisition
(religious court) was set up by the Catholic and Spain during the fifteenth century to accuse and punish people who failed to agree with the church or authority. During this story Poe taps into your mind and senses to express fear throughout the story.
