More than 100,000 girls are murdered every year because they fail to produce sons or families are not satisfied with their dowries
Dowry: property or money brought by a bride to her husband on the event of their marriage

Unfair treatment toward women
Family is planned out
"A daughter is a burden on her father's head."
- a common Hindi saying
Before birth:
sex-selective abortions

After birth:
"Let a female child be born
somewhere else. Here, let a son
be born"
-religious verse
Beliefs that sons bring wealth
Sons are taught family traditions and perform the last rites
Sons take care of parents

Expected to be payed by a woman's family to the family she is marrying into
Daughters are thus considered a drain on a family and its resources

Sons= gain of wealth + gain of daughter-in-law

Daughters= loss of wealth + loss of daughter
"Rearing a daughter is like watering a neighbor's tree"
-a Telegu saying
"About 107 million females are missing from the globe today"(Kristof xv).
"Every year,
at least
another 2 million girls worldwide disappear because of gender discrimination"(Kristof xv).
"More girls have been killed in the last fifty years, precisely because they were girls, than men were killed in all the battles of the twentieth century. More girls are killed in this routine "gendercide" in any one decade than were slaughtered in all the genocides of the twentieth century"(Kristof xvii).
Wars and Genocides of the 20th Century Include (But are not limited to):
World War I
World War II
The Holocaust
Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Cold War
Tianamen Square Protests

And also wars within:
Spain, Russia and later the Soviet Union,
and Afghanistan.

Gender discrimination has many effects, many of which are not obvious.
"Security experts [of the USA] noticed that the countries that nurture terrorists are disproportionately those where women are marginalized. The reason there are so many Muslim terrorists, they argued, has little to do with the Koran but a great deal to do with the lack of robust female participation in Islamic countries....Empowering girls, some of the military argued, would disempower terrorists"(Kristof xxi).
"To deny women is to deprive a country of labor and talent, but-even worse-to undermine the drive to achievement of boys and men. One cannot rear young people in such wise that half of them think themselves superior by biology, without dulling ambition and devaluing accomplishment"(Kristof 160).
Saudi Arabia projected to make Top 10 in technology by 2010
Bill Gates in Saudi Arabia
"Well, if you're not fully utilizing half the talent in the country, you're not going to get too close to the Top 10" (The Women's Crusade).
United States
"In normal circumstances women live longer than men, and so there are more females than males in much of the world"(Kristof xv).
