Transcript of Swiss Chalet
By: Amrit D and Katie P
Main Course: Quarter chicken (white meat, skinless)
The Swiss Chalet Franchise does not exist in Saskatchewan or Quebec because the success rate was very low
In Quebec, Swiss Chalet first renamed the restaurant, Chalet Suisse, however competition with competitor, St. Hubert's Chicken, was too great.
The Swiss Chalet Franchise may also pull out of British Columbia in the future because of minimal profit.
Although Cara is not looking to franchise a restaurant in the Oakville area at this time, other potential locations include...
Franchise Fee: $60 000
Construction Fee: $1.2 - $1.5 million
Start-Up Capital: $500 000 - $600 000
Percentage of Sales:
Royalties: 5%, Advertising: 4%
Delivery: 7% Local Advertising: 1%
Total Investment: $1 600 000 - $1 800 000
The reason we selected Swiss Chalet as our franchise is because it is a well known Canadian, family-oriented restaurant.
-Swiss Chalet was founded in 1954 in Toronto.
-The first Swiss Chalet was located at 234 Bloor Street West and was in operation for 52 years.
-Owned by Cara, one of Canada's largest full service restaurant companies.
"To make a fresh impression on Canadians and reignite the importance of family dinner."
Medicine Hat, AB
-Swiss Chalet is known for their rotisserie chicken, home-cut fries and signature Chalet dipping sauce
-They have exceptional service in dining, take-out and delivery and drive-thru
Swiss Chalet's main competition is Boston Pizza. Their philosophy is "To be a world class franchiser through selecting and training people to profitably manage an outstanding food service business."
Boston Pizza, Montana's, Kelsey's and other fast casual restaurant are competition for Swiss Chalet. However, since Swiss Chalet provides four main types of service any restaurant is competition.
The greatest competition for take-out and delivery at the moment are the home meal replacement options: Rotisserie chicken from Costco, supermarkets, etc.
Yes, we would invest in a Swiss Chalet franchise because Swiss Chalet is well-established, is one of Canada's largest full service restaurant companies and is part of a larger successful business, Cara. With the help of their marketing, product development, purchasing, real estate, information technology and training teams, our success rate should be fairly high.

-Boston Pizza has been in existence for over 30 years.
-Last year Boston Pizza made system- wide sales of $943 million compared to Swiss Chalet which makes approximately $537 500 000
-Boston pizza has 350 locations in Canada whereas Swiss Chalet has 215
Swiss Chalet is opening 25 new locations this year alone!
Another unique feature about Swiss Chalet is that they provide dine-in, delivery, drive-thru, and take-out service.
In our opinion, we think that our success rate would be high because we have seen the success of Swiss Chalet's in the Oakville area.
