ISTT holds its 30th International No-Dig show in São Paulo, Brazil and begins its 4th decade of activities.

British Gas and DJ Ryan applied for the first basic method and equipment patents for pipe bursting.
The first microtunneling project in the U.S. occurred in south Florida for a 600 foot crossing of a 72" pipe under I-95 and the FEC Railroad.

Center for Advancement of Trenchless Technology (CATT) is established at the University of Waterloo, Canada.
Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology is expanded to include New Zealand.
The 1st ASCE Pipeline Division Conference devoted to Trenchless Projects is held in Boston, MA.
