context clues
to determine the meaning of
unknown

academic vocabulary
Congratulations!
You are now a little bit more informed and a little bit more knowledgable about contextual clues involving
synonyms!
I hope you all have a pencil to work on your
synonym
worksheet!
What is a synonym?
A
synonym
is a phrase or word that has a similar meaning as another word.

Authors use
synonyms
to help the reader with words they believe might be difficult for the reader.

The
synonym
can come
before, during, or after
the sentence in which the unknown vocabulary word was used.
Locating the
synonym

He decided to listen to some Kendrick Lamar during his short
break
.

In this example, the word break and hiatus were
synonyms
. This was evident because the word short came before both words, letting me know that hiatus and break are
synonyms
.

Now I know that hiatus means break.

synonym
may come up.

Like, Such as, For example, For instance, Including, Also, Too.

These words do NOT guarantee that a
synonym
will be used as a context clue to help you figure out a word, but it is a possibility.

synonym
.
Let's try another!
The country of Belgium still has a

Is there a signal word?
What does
