1. Create profile on MapBox.com & download TileMill
3. Upload MB file to your Mapbox account & share
2. Upload layers, style, export file.
QuantumGIS (free) or ArcGIS (not free) to view and manipulate geospatial data;
Graphics editor to create and edit icons, patterns, and textures. Ex: Inkscape,Adobe Illustrator, and Fireworks. GIMP for bitmap graphics, Seashore for Mac users; (I use GIS...)
Spatial database ...  PostgreSQL with PostGIS. This is optional but recommended, especially if you wish to work with OpenStreetMap or other large datasets.
