The End When Kerry leaves Carl believes that his mother does not love
him. He feels broken hearted and just sit and watches everything like a statue and just lets Sarah do everything. Before his mother left she went on small 'holidays' for about five days. Carl could almost tell the signs when his mother was going away 'there was the frantic mood, the screeching, the recrimination. What are you doing here? You mucking up my life. I can't stand it. Kerry never said these words but Carl heard them' (pg5). On Christmas Carl expected nothing but Beryl gave them $20 each and Carl bought her a coffee plunger. Beryl was happy with the coffee plunger 'It's one of those coffee plungers, said Aunt Beryl when she opened the package. I love the smell of fresh coffee. Her delight grew as she examined it and like so many others on Christmas morning, she wanted to try it out straight away' (Pg 37). They went to dinner with Bruce's family and recognised the sun bleached boy from the café was Bruce's brother. When Carl works on the barge he feels like he has a purpose and puts everything into it. Carl“couldn’t explain to the boy how he loved working on the barge, how alive he felt between its rusting sides.” (pg.102) . Skip has learned to forgive the Matts. Carl works hard to beat the Wattle Lady (the opposition barge). When Carl goes to the Beau of Missing people and finds out his mother died he does not want to believe that it is true. But most of all just wanted to know if he loved him, Harley and Sarah. He is upset but the pain inside him is slowly going away ' I thought she was happy somewhere, without me. It hurt me so much to think of her my own mother.' In the end they Joy rings for more information and they find out that his mother was involved in a car accident and it was five days after she left. Joy found out the bus was heading city to Carl, Harley and Sarah.
Carl is invited to Maddie's Farewell party. He is excited because it is his first party. When Carl gets there everyone wants to talk to him and he feels popular and a bit overwhelmed by the attention. Nathan arrives and Carl stands up to him and he has a new found confidence and everyone is proud of him. He became closer to Justine and realizes that she wants to be more than friends. For once Carl feels like a normal teenager and enjoys it.
But I am sure there is more to come!
