A household administrator and an architect- decorator to the Marchese of Caravaggio
Lucia Aratori EARLY LIFE (1571-1592) Birth Name: Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio
Born on September 29, 1571
Born in Milan
Moved to Caravaggio in 1576 to escape plague in Milan
His father died in Caravaggio in 1577
Grew up with his mother until she died in 1584
The same year, he began his four- year apprenticeship to the Milanese painter Simone Peterzano
After his apprenticeship, he stayed in Milan- Caravaggio area but visited Venice in between to see the works of Giorgione and Titan Rome (1592-1600) Left Milan for Rome in mid 1592
Left Milan because of few quarrels and wounding a police officer
He arrived in Rome "naked and extremely needy ... without fixed address and without provision ... short of money."
A few months later, he performed hack- work for the highly successful Giuseppe Cesari painting flowers and fruit in a factory like workshop
His earliest painting was made during this time : Boy Peeling a Fruit
Other works done around 1592 include Boy with a Basket of Fruit, and the Young Sick Bacchus Rome (1592-1600) After leaving Cesari in 1594, he met an architect called Onorio Longhi who introduced him to Roman street- brawls
Around this time, he created the painting called The Fortune Teller, his first composition with more than one figure which shows Mario being cheated by a gypsy girl
Another painting of that time, The Cardsharps, also created by Caravaggio shows a a youth falling victim of card cheats
Both of these paintings brought a new style - Cheat- to Rome
They became very famous later but at that time, Caravaggio sold them for almost nothing Rome (1592-1600) Caravaggio brought back Realism with his first painting on religious theme in 1995
That painting was called Penitent Magdalene
Other paintings by him during the next few years showed the same theme Penitent Magdalene Saint Catherine Martha and Mary Magdalene Judith Beheading Holofernes Sacrifice of Isaac Rome (1592-1600) After all those paintings, he became famous for Realism or Naturalism
He preferred to paint his subjects as the eye sees them, with all the natural flaws and defects instead of idealized creations.
One of the most important thing he did was to work in oil directly from subjects
He made all his paintings half the length of the figures and still life
One of the paintings during this time which show Caravaggio's talent is Supper at Emmaus Supper at Emmaus 1600-1606 The time when he was known as the most famous painter in Rome
Earlier this time, he got a contract of decorating a church
His paintings for the church created a style called Tenebrism which uses violent contrasts of light and dark
Some of his paintings during 1600 are The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew and Calling of Saint Matthew Giorgione Titan 1600-1606 By 1602, he had started creating painting on violent struggles and torture and death
in 1602, he created a masterpiece called The Taking of Christ The Fortune Teller The Cardsharps The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew Calling of Saint Matthew The Taking of Christ 1600-1606 Some of the other paintings created during these years are: Amor Victorious (1602) The Entombment of Christ (1603) Madonna di Loreto
(1604-1606) Madonna and Child with
St. Anne (1605-1606) Exile and Death (1606-1610) Loved brawling
May 29,1606, killed a young man, possibly unintentionally
Couldn't run from laws hence fled to Naples
In a few months, he left for Malta
His works in Malta include The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (the only painting he put his signature on) The Beheading of Saint John the
(1608) Exile and Death (1606-1610) He got arrested in late August 1608 but managed to escape by December
He went to Sicily to his old Friend Mario Minniti
The paintings he created during his stay in Sicily are: Burial of Saint Lucy (1608) The Raising of Lazarus
(1609) Adoration of the Shepherds
(1609) The Seven Works of Mercy
(1606-1607), Malta Exile and Death (1606-1610) After 9 months in Sicily, he returned to Naples
There, in 1610, he painted The Denial of Saint Peter, John the Baptist, and his last picture, The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula
He died on July 18, 1610 The Denial of Saint Peter The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula As an Artist It is said that he put the "oscuro(shadows) into Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is a technique which uses lightness and darkness in a painting
His style came to known as Caravaggism, which impacted many young artists in Rome
They started calling themselves Caravaggisti
