Transcript of Dennis Nilsen: The Kindly Killer

The Kindly Killer Dennis Nilsen Description of Case Works Cited Dennis Nilsen is an English man who kills for company. He had many short lived homosexual relationships in his early life. One of his victims he picked up was a boy in a London pub that he brought back to his apartment. After spending the night together, Nilsen killed the boy in his sleep. He was afraid the boy would leave him, so he made his body feel right at home. The boy's body stayed in the apartment for a few days, posed for daily activities such as eating dinner and watching T.V. Nilsen had many "friends" that he would pick up at the local pubs. One fateful day, his “friends” would leave him because of the plumber who found rotten flesh and bones in the apartment’s sewer system. Nilsen's first murder occured in 1978, and his last was in 1983. These are some historical events that could be relevant to these murders (Note: Dennis Nilsen was raised Catholic) Historical Facts Stephen Dean Holmes Victims Dennis Nilsen Sources Pope Paul VI dead at 80; the new Pope, John Paul I dies unexpectantly after 34 days in office Jim Jone's followers commit mass suicide in Jonestown, Gyuana 1978 1981 Assasination attempt on the Pope

He was an alcoholic and a homosexual. He could have felt suffering and oppression because of this. He was raised in a catholic home, and with two Popes dying in such a short period of time, it could have affected his mental health. Nilsen dismembered his victims after killing him. He would store their body parts in different places in his apartment. After a while, neighbors noticed the horrible smell coming from around his apartment, and he told them that it was related to structural issues within the building. Eventually, a drainage specialist came to his apartment complex to inspect where this smell could be coming from and a possible drain blockage. During the initial inspection, partially decomposed human remains were found coming from different pipes. That night, Nilsen attempted to remove some of the tissue from pipes throughout the building, but a tenant caught him. The next day, the police came out to investigate and another more thorough inspection was done. On Februrary 9, 1983, Detective Chief Inspector Jay questioned Nilsen about the human remains left in the pipe system in the apartment. Nilsen openly confessed to the murders and told him that he needed to look for bags around the apartment full of remains. Nilsen was arrested and admitted to 15 murders. http://www.citv.com.au/crime-files/detail.aspx?f=26&c=4 Chief Inspector Jay found samples of hair inside of the pipes that were proven to be human hair through forensic hair analysis. There were also bones buried in the backyard, an almost complete torso in the apartment, and many other remains found that were proven to be human by forensic anthropologists. http://murderpedia.org/male.N/n/nilsen-dennis-photos-2.htm Left: Nilsen's apartment complext at 194 Melrose Ave.

He was convicted on six murders and two attempted murders. His sentence given on November 4th, 1983 was life in prison. He is still in prison today. Even though he was only convicted of six murders, it is common knowledge that he admitted to 15. The only remorse that Nilsen showed was that he could not list every single man he killed. Future Cases Dennis Nilsen has been known as the "British Jeffrey Dahmer". Certain aspects of the Nilsen case must have affected how they dealt with Dahmer's case. This is because Nilsen's trial was before Dahmer's, and their cases are very similar. Dennis Nilsen's Background Dennis Nilsen was born on November 23, 1945. He grew up in an English home. His mother was catholic and he served in the British army in the 1960's. Professor David Bowen (pictured) was the forensic pathologist that worked on this case. He worked with Detective Jay to determine the cause of death of Nilsen’s victims and where he hid the evidence. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/8446356/Professor-David-Bowen.html http://desmanipulador.blogspot.com/2012/08/dennis-nilsen-serial-killer.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Nilsen Top Left: Kitchen where some victims were drowned.
