Hello! My name is
Before starting the colony of Georgia, I lived in England where I was very rich. In England, not everyone was rich like I was. In fact, if you couldn't pay your bills, you would be thrown in prison!
I wanted to give the prisoners a fresh start in the New World. I got permission from the King to start the colony of Georgia with 114 men, women, and children.
We set sail headed for the colony of Georgia and it took us 3 months to arrive on the shores of Savannah. When we arrived, there were already people living on the land. We later found out these people were called the Yamacraw Indians.
I was expecting life to be simple, but it was far from simple. It was very difficult and much different from how you live today. We had to make our small houses, grow our own food (or trade with the help of Mary Musgrove), make our own clothes, and hunt for animals so we would have meat.
The Yamacraw Indians seemed like nice people, but we could not communicate with them because they did not speak English. We needed an interpreter to help us communicate with the tribe.
With the help of Mary Musgrove, we were able to speak to the Yamacraw Chief, Tomochichi. We were able to make peace with the Yamacraw Indians and live in harmony.
Some of our most successful crops were peaches and cotton. Do you know what you can make with these two items?!
I decided to create a tribe of Indians called the Yamacraws. We built a town near the Savannah River and I later became the Chief of the tribe.
When James Oglethorpe arrived in Savannah, I wanted to make sure that there was peace between my tribe and his people. To welcome them, I gave Oglethorpe a special gift. It was a bison hide with an eagle painted on it and an eagle feather, which stood for peace.
For the rest of my life, the Yamacraw Indians and settlers lived in peace. We also showed them a few things about our land, like how to plant seeds to make their own food.
So, today I am going to teach you how to plant a seed! Just like I taught the new settlers! Do you know what all you need in order to grow and keep a plant alive?!
Let's get started!
Take your cup (make sure your name is on it) and fill it half full with the soil provided.
Place a single lima bean seed in the soil. Then add a little more soil to cover up the seed. Your cup should be about 3/4 full, and you shouldn't be able to see your seed at all.
Your plant will need water and sunlight to grow! We will be watering our plants everyday with the measuring cup provided and we will leave them in our windowsill so they can soak up some rays!
Keep a record of how your plant grows!
Everyday write in your journal and tell me how much water you gave your plant. After it starts to sprout, we will measure how many centimeters it grows everyday!
I grew up in Georgia, in a creek village called Coweta. Most of my childhood I was learning how to live on the land. I would gather wild plants for food and medicine and I was also taught how to sew, cook, and farm.
When I was 10 years old my father and I moved to an English settlement in Charles Town and I learned all about the English settlers. I was even taught how to speak English!
When I was 15, I moved back to Coweta, my hometown. Since I knew how to speak English, I became the interpreter between the Indians and the English settlers.
I started up a trading post where I would trade deerskin from the Indians for metal tools and cloth from the English settlers. A trading post is used to help people trade things they had extra of for things they needed. People could also pay with cash just like you do at a store today, but our cash system was different.

After everyone has written their portion of the brochure, read over each other's writing and help each other with any mistakes that you see!
As a group, create your brochure! It needs to include:

Without the contributions of James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove and Tomochichi, Georgia would be a very different place than what it is today. Reflect in your writing journal how you think Georgia would be today without our founders.
