does not include a learning problem that is primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor disabilities; intellectual disability; emotional disturbance; cultural, environmental, or economic disadvantage; limited English proficiency; a lack of appropriate instruction in reading, including the five essential components of reading instruction as defined in section 1208 (3) of the ESA, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency including oral reading skills, and reading comprehension strategies; and a lack of appropriate instruction in math

Characteristics of SLD
Neurological problem
Genetic contribution (75% chance if both parents affected & 51% chance if one parent affected)
Less stimulating environment
Environmental pollutants or teratogens
Causes of SLD
IQ tests may be biased or inaccurate
Must wait for student to fail (usually age 9)
Neither discrepancy nor RTI model is proven valid through research
Students with low IQs do not usually qualify under discrepancy model
Problems with Identification
Early intervention (embed learning in daily activities)
Differentiated instruction
Advance organizers as cognitive road maps
Visual or graphic organizers
Models, demonstrations, role play
Presentation cues to emphasize key points
Scaffolding key concepts
Increasing student involvement and engagement
Teach strategies for self-directed learning (academic, organizational)
Teach self-advocacy
Plan for transition from high school
Strategies for SLD
IQ - 22 = Cut Score
(Any SLD area that falls below the cut score is an area of SLD for that student)
