When there is tidal bulge, there is gravitational forces acting and centrifugal forces working that cause the bulge on both side of the earth, one with the moon and one opposite the moon. Tidal Bulge The tides don't just happen at the same time every day. The tides run on something called a cycle. About every 24 hours and 52 minutes, two high tides and two low tides will have passed. This is called one tide cycle. Tide Cycles If you are along a coast line of a large body of water such as an ocean, you will have the tides. Things such as your locations geological coastline can affect things like the quantity of water there, and also the current weather. Storms are always active in the oceans and these storms can move large bodies of water different places, affecting the way the tides work. Location is everything Every phase of the moon brings a different magnetic pull towards the earth, and in a different place because the earth rotates. When the moon is either full or new, the pull from the moon and the sun are combined and this causes extra high tides and extra low tides. These are called spring tides and neap tides. How does the tide change? The tides on the earth are caused by the earths position and the gravitational pull of the moon that circles it. The moon and the earth are attracted to each other just like the opposites on a magnet. The earth seems to hold onto everything when it is pulled towards the moon, except it cannot seem to keep it's water completely. A tide is the rising and falling of a large body of water over a specific period of time. The most common natural disaster that is affected by the astronomical tides is Hurricanes or Typhoons. When the predicted astronomical tide is very high, and a hurricane or typhoon strikes, it can cause up to double the devastation because the flood water levels will be huge compared to if the tides were on a low cycle. A prime example of this is Hurricane Katrina that hit in 2005. The High Spring tides were in cycle at that point, and the hurricane struck, rising water over the breaks and flooding everywhere. Natural Disasters A spring tide will happen when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are all in the same line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the sun combined add to the tides. The tides also change when there is a quarter moon. The angle that the moon and the earth and the sun line up with cancels each other out and the tides are not as extreme like they are during spring tides. They are actually especially weak tides with the sun and the moon becoming perpendicular to each other. These tides are called neap tides. An eclipse is an event where a celestial body is either having it's light blocked, or a shadow cast upon it.On our earth, A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes before the sun, blocking the light. A lunar eclipse is when the earth blocks the path of light between the sun and the moon, and the earth casts a shadow upon the moon. One thing people would think would be with the sun and moon in line, the tides would have extra gravitational force, but that's not true. The tides change in no way when there's an eclipse. The gravitational force never changes for either object, thus we have the same tides. The Bay of Fundy can experience tides that can reach from 14.5 meters and 16.3 meters at high tide. What causes the tides on Earth? Mythology The ancient greeks and roman both has gods of the Sea, which we would commonly know as Poseidon.
