Types of Energy
There are 7 main types of energy:
mechanical, electrical, heat, light,
sound, chemical, and nuclear.
Other Types of Energy
Electrical Energy:
Energy Transformations
Energy can never be destroyed.
Instead, one type of energy transforms
into another type of energy.

Mechanical Energy
Mechanical energy is special. It comes in two forms:
Kinetic and
Potential energy:
Kinetic Energy:
energy that a body
possesses by virtue of
being in motion.
Or, to put it simply...
motion energy.
For example,
this skier
speeding down a hill
possesses kinetic energy.
the energy possessed
by a body by
virtue of
its position relative
to others, stresses within
itself, electric
charge, and
other factors.
Or, energy that
an object possesses
and can use.
The people at the
top of the rollercoaster
possess potential energy since
they are still and waiting
to go down the hill. When that
happens, the potential energy
is transferred to kinetic
energy made available by
the flow of electric
charge through a conductor
For example,
televisions or lightning.
Heat Energy:
a form of energy
that is transferred by a
difference in temperature
fire, the sun, a cup of hot tea.

the radiant energy of
electromagnetic waves
in the visible portion of
the electric spectrum

during nuclear fission or fusion, especially when used to generate electricity.
Chemical Transformations
Chemical to Mechanical:
1. eating food and using
that energy to run, walk, or move.
2. A car uses gasoline that powers and
moves the car.
Chemical to Heat:
1. When fuel is burned, chemical
energy becomes heat.
2. Fireworks are combustion reactions
that transfer into heat as they explode.
Chemical to Sound:
1. A gunshot- combustion
to earsplitting bangs.
2. Explosions. Combustion to many
different sounds. (This is also Chemical to Light.)
Mechanical to Heat:
1. Friction (like rubbing your
hands together).
2. Starting campfires by
rubbing wood together.
Mechanical to Sound:
1. A car going down
the road (if it is making
typical car noises).
2. Slapping your forehead.
(Duh, why didn't I think
of that first?)
Mechanical to Electrical:
1. Generators.
2. Crank radios.
Nuclear to Electrical:
1. Nuclear reactors.
2. Uranium processing.
Nuclear to Light:
1. the Sun (nuclear
reactions to blinding
2. Nuclear bombs.
Nuclear to Heat:
1. Nuclear reactors.
2. Nuclear Bombs.
