gemstoneeducation.com The mineral amethyst is a unique mineral. Amethyst is a mineral that is really a purple variety of the mineral quartz. This mineral has the chemical formula SiO2, and is a silicate, which is the most common rock-forming mineral group. This is an example of streak. The Mohs Scale is used to calculate a mineral's hardness, with number one being a soft mineral, and number ten being a hard mineral. A sample of amethyst on the Mohs Scale is a seven, which is really hard. An amethyst crystal can scratch the minerals talc and calcite, but cannot scratch the minerals diamond and topaz. Luster is the way in which a mineral reflects light. Amethyst reflects light and appears to look glossy, so it is classified with a glossy luster. It also has a non-metallic luster. The star shows the hardness of amethyst on the Mohs Scale. Amethyst has the same hardness as the mineral quartz. Cleavage is the tendency of a mineral to break along flat surfaces, while fracture is the tendency of a mineral to break into irregular pieces. Amethyst does not show any cleavage, but it does show fracture. An amethyst crystal has a conchoidal fracture, which means that it breaks in a curved way. This picture has irregular shaped pieces of amethyst that fracture. Special Properties, Specific Gravity, and Transparency On the left, the picture shows minerals under ultra-violet light. The picture in the middle demonstrates a way to test specific gravity. On the right, the amethyst shows transparency because you can see through it easily. Thanks for watching!
