The color of an amethyst can range from a light pink to a deep purple color. The color in amethyst is caused when the mineral quartz has iron impurities or is exposed to radiation. An amethyst's color can also become faded if exposed to many light sources and can get dark in color when colored artificially. An amethyst's streak color is white. Some minerals have special properties that make them unique, such as taste, magnetism, and odor. The mineral amethyst is acidic and is fluoresent in ultra-violet light. Specific gravity is how dense a given object is or how dense an object is compared to another object. The specific gravity of a amethyst sample is 2.65 g\l. Transparency is how clear an object is. The transparency of amethyst is transparent to translucent, meaning you can see through it. Amethyst is a valuable mineral. It can be used to make necklaces, bracelets, and other types of jewelry. It can be made into ornaments, and used to engrave. Amethyst can be important to many religions. For example, in the Christian religion, it is considered the stone of the bishops, and can be used for ornaments for christianity. This mineral has the chemical formula SiO2, and is a silicate, which is the most common rock-forming mineral group. This is an example of streak. The Mohs Scale is used to calculate a mineral's hardness, with number one being a soft mineral, and number ten being a hard mineral. A sample of amethyst on the Mohs Scale is a seven, which is really hard. An amethyst crystal can scratch the minerals talc and calcite, but cannot scratch the minerals diamond and topaz. Luster is the way in which a mineral reflects light. Amethyst reflects light and appears to look glossy, so it is classified with a glossy luster. It also has a non-metallic luster. The star shows the hardness of amethyst on the Mohs Scale. Amethyst has the same hardness as the mineral quartz. Cleavage is the tendency of a mineral to break along flat surfaces, while fracture is the tendency of a mineral to break into irregular pieces. Amethyst does not show any cleavage, but it does show fracture. An amethyst crystal has a conchoidal fracture, which means that it breaks in a curved way.
