Hair bows became popular during Queen Victoria's reign, from 1837-1901
Era known for very plain, simple, and subdued aesthetics (lacking in fashion)
Where hair accessories first became common
Hair bows began becoming more fashionable in the Edwardian Era, from 1901-1910
Era known to be more fanciful and decorative
Where hair bows begin to appear more in fashion history
Hair bows date all the way back to early Greek, Roman, and Egyptian times
Early cave dwellers used sticks, thorns, and bones as hair clips
At first hair bows were worn by boys in the 18th century
It was known as a child style, but also an adult style
Bows were worn by the soldiers to keep the hair out of their faces and were used to keep their pigtails in place
A bow tie is a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner
They can be made out of any fabric material, but most are made form silk, polyester, cotton, or a mixture of fabrics
The traditional bow tie, consists of a strip of cloth which the wearer ties it by hand, also known as "self-tie"
"Clip-ons" are very common, where the bow tie has a clip behind and clips onto the collar of the shirt
The bow tie had originated from the Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars in the 17th century
Croat mercenaries used a scarf around the neck to hold together the opening of their shirts
Soon adapted by the upper classes in France
Under cravat, derived from the French for Croat
Bow ties had flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries
Hair bows remained a fairly popular hair accessory for girls throughout the 20th and 21st centuries
Now the use of hair bows had disappeared for boys, but became even more common for girls
Bow ties have had several stereotypes of the past, but are becoming, a more mainstream fashion statement
Now the use of bow ties are often worn for formal occasions
