Transcript of Conditions of the Deep Ocean

Technology: Deep Sea Submersibles
Any slight error could lead to certain death.
Life support:
Scrubbers
Oxygen supply: pressurized tanks or oxygen generator
Dehumidifier
Discomfort in the deep sea submersible
What limits us from exploring the deep ocean?
Why do we need to explore it?
The Factors That Prevent Us from Exploring the Deep Ocean
Its harsh conditions:
Light Penetration
Pressure
Technological Limits
Scuba Diving
Deep Sea Submersibles
Technology: Scuba Diving
Harsh Conditions: Light Penetration
Harsh Conditions: Oceanic Pressure
For every 10 meters that one goes below the surface, the pressure increases by one atmosphere.
A single person does not possess the ability to travel to the bottom the ocean without any protective gear
Deep-sea explorers are protected by titanium-doped steel, which is why they are able to descend to the depths of the ocean.

Effects of Pressure
During diver training, students are urged to not dive below 130 feet
Deep Diving requires an immense amount of preparation
Possible health risks:
High blood carbon dioxide levels
Oxygen toxicity
Nitrogen narcosis
Decompression illness
Exploring the Ocean
The majority of the ocean floor has not been touched by humans
Satellite cannot directly measure the seafloor
In order to map the ocean floor in greater detail, we must use sonar instead of satellite.
Sonar technology can map about 100m underneath, but only a narrow specific area
