Type of Poem James Berry Childhood Tracks
-Thesis- Life Was Innocent James Berry shows the changes
of what the world used to be to what it is now by writing:

"Hearing a distant braying of a donkey in a silent hot afternoon." (19-20)

"Seeing children playing in the schoolyard..." (30)

"Drinking cool water from a calabash gourd on worked land in the hills." (6-7) The poem Childhood Tracks by JameS Berry is a free verse poem because the poem does not rhyme and it does not use consistent meter patterns. The style that James Berry writes in is repetitive. In the first stanzas, he bases the paragraphs on his childhood memories of eating things, then on smelling things, and then continues with the other senses.

"Eating Crisp fried fish [...] Eating sheared ice [...] Smelling a patch of [...] Smelling mixed whiffs [...] Hearing a nightingale [...] Hearing dawn-crowing of cocks." (1) (2) (8) (10) (13) (15) James Berry was born in Jamaica in 1925 and
emigrated to England in 1948. He is one of the four
most famous poets of this time. A book that James Berry wrote is The Bluefoot Traveler: Anthology of
Westindam in poet in Britain. James Berry's writing is known for exploring relationships between black and white communities. By examining the world's past, present and possible future, it is clear that the free verse poem Childhood Tracks by James Berry is about the changes that the earth is undergoing, and how it is good to appreciate the innocence and simplicity of life when you are young. In the poem, James Berry shows that the world
used to be innocent by writing:

"Hearing a nightingale in a song in moonlight and sea sound." (13-14)
"Hearing the laughter of barefeet children carrying water." (17-18)
"Eating young jelly-coconut mixed with village made wet sugar." (4-5) Life is Dreadful Childhood Tracks! Presentation by: Maddie, Masoumeh and Olivia < James Berry In life we used to be able to hear the relaxing
sea sound, kids used to have easier jobs that they enjoyed and sweets were fresh and organic. We used to have animals living around the town, but now, because we have destroyed the forests, they have no where to live. Children used to be able to play in schoolyards without being in danger, but now there is trash and glass on the ground and they have to be careful where they play. We used to be able to drink or eat fresh fruit right off of the trees, but now we have destroyed the forests and the fruit trees and paved over them so now we can not just find fruit on trees and eat it. Life can be good again In his poem, James Berry infers that perhaps, life could be this good for children again. He shows the joy and simplicity of life that could live on through various quotes: "Drinking cool water from a calabash gourd on worked land in the hills." (6-7)

"Hearing the laughter of barefeet children carrying water." (17-18)

"Seeing an evening's dusky hour lit up by dotted lamplight." (34-35) These quotes portray the beautiful chastity of a life before so much technology, before pollution, and being various problems that our dying world harbors. We can no longer drink fresh, organic water, but have to settle for bottled water full of chemicals. Children now sit at home and play video games instead of doing physical work outside, strengthening them and making them happy. We can barely see the sky these days, because of light pollution. All of the problems addressed in this poem are caused by humans, and can be fixed by humans as well. Conclusion Life used to be innocent, there used
to be no problems, at least in the lives of children. Life is now much harder in certain ways and more problems exist. It is now more dreadful but we are the generation that can help save the future. Knock knock. Who's there?
We are! http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=footprints+in+the+sand&um=1&hl=en&tbo=d&biw=1366&bih=571&tbm=isch&tbnid=83CQJUgzMKgazM:&imgrefurl=http://joog07.wordpress.com/leona-lewis-footprints-in-the-sand-review/&docid=BzLS0FGr_n97NM&imgurl=http://joog07.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/footprints_in_the_sand_op_493x600.jpg&w=493&h=600&ei=xTbLUKv9HYbh0wG37oDICg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1036&vpy=140&dur=1292&hovh=248&hovw=203&tx=102&ty=156&sig=101888330567421400275&page=1&tbnh=151&tbnw=115&start=0&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0,i:172
