Joseph John Thomson
Birthplace-
Manchester, United Kingdom
Birth Date-
December 18, 1856
Year of Discovery-
1897

Discovery-
J.J. Thomson discovered the electron which is one of the main parts of an atom. He also discovered the nature of positively charged particles. One last thing he did was create the plum pudding model.

How He Did It-
J.J. did this by using a cathode ray tube.
Cathode ray tube-
The cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns, and a fluorescent screen used to view images. It is to accelerate and deflect the electron beam(s) onto the screen to create the images.

Fun Fact-
His father, a bookseller and publisher, planned a career in engineering for Joseph, but since no apprenticeship could be found for him in any engineering firm, he was sent temporarily to college in Manchester at the age of 14. As a result of his ability and determination, he won a scholarship in 1876 and entered Trinity College, Cambridge; he remained there for the rest of his life.

Ernest Rutherford
Birthplace-
Nelson, New Zealand
Birth Date-
August 30, 1871
Year Of Discovery-
1906

Discovery-
Ernest Rutherford discovered that the atom has a nucleus.

How He Did It-
Ernest Rutherford discovered that the atom had a nucleus by watching his two students conduct a gold foil alpha particle scattering experiment which showed large deflections for a small fraction if incident particles.

Fun Fact-
In 1919, Rutherford was persuaded to succeed Thomson as director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge, a post he would hold until his death.

Niels Bohr
Electron
One of the three main parts of an atom is an electron. It has a negative charge. The location of an electron is shells or orbitals. It is the smallest of the three main parts. (Electron, proton, and neutron.)
Neutron
The third and final main part of an atom is the neutron. The neutron has a neutral charge. A neutrons location is in a nucleus. All elements have atoms with neutrons except one.

Nucleus-
the positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass.
What is an atom?
Atom- An atom is any of the tiny particles of which the chemical elements are made of. An atom has three main parts. An electron, a proton, and a neutron. Atoms are so small that yo can't see them without a very powerful microscope.
The Atom
Proton
Another one of the main parts of an atom is a proton. A proton's charge is positive. It's location is in a nucleus.

Nucleus-
the positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass.
John Dalton
Birthplace-
Eagle field, England
Birth date-
September 6,1766
Year of Discovery-
1803

Discovery-
John Dalton discovered the atomic theory. The atomic theory is a scientific theory of the nature of matter.

How He Did It-
John Dalton discovered the atomic theory by assuming that oxygen and nitrogen have different weights. This lead to his theory.

His theory included:
1.
All matter was composed of small indivisible particles termed atoms.
2.
Three types of atoms exist: simple, compound, and complex.

Fun Facts:
1.
John Dalton discovered color blindness.
2.
John Dalton though the atom was shaped like a ball.

Birthplace-
Copenhagen, Denmark
Birth Date-
October 7, 1885
Year Of Discovery-
1913

Discovery-
Niels Bohr discovered a successful quantum model of the atom. His model suggested that electrons move in specific orbits around the nucleus of an atom.

How He Did It-
Niels Bohr did this by combining theories with Ernest Rutherford.

His Model Suggested:
His model suggested that electrons move in specific orbits around the nucleus of an atom.

Quantum-
a discrete quantity of energy proportional in magnitude to the frequency of the radiation it represents.

Fun Fact
- After 1939, Bohr's life was largely devoted to humanitarian efforts, such as intervening for the Danish Jews; he had to save human lives, including his own and those of his family.

James Chadwick
Birthplace-
England
Birth Date-
October 20, 1891
Year Of Discovery-
1932

Discovery-
James Chadwick discovered the neutron. The neutron is one of the three main parts of an atom.

How He Did It-
James Chadwick did this by using wax and polonium he shot the polonium with an electrical current recording the behavior leading to the discovery of the neutron.

Fun Fact
- Although his intention was to study mathematics, Chadwick was admitted to the physics programs and was too shy to correct the error.

Robert Millikan

Birthplace-
Morrison, Illinois
Birth date-
March 22, 1868
Year of Discovery-
1908

Discovery-
Robert Millikan discovered the electrons negative charge.

How He Did It-
Robert Millikan did this by using charged oil experiments. He only selected "good" oil drops.

Fun Fact-
Millikan graduated with high marks from Maquoketa High School in 1886. Following in his parents' footsteps, he then entered the Oberlin college preparatory program, and then the college itself the next year.
