Transcript of FORM IIIB - NACHO Y MATEO C- olympic games

olympic games
The Olympic Games started in Ancient Greece. The Ancient Greeks believed that sport was an important way of honoring the gods. All the city states sent athletes to Olympia to take part in chariot races, athletics and field sports, such as throwing the discuss and taking part in the long jump. Wars were suspended so that every athlete could travel safely to Olympia.
The games lasted for five days and large crowds would watch. Women were not allowed to watch or to take part in the Olympics. However, unmarried women were allowed to come to some of the events to look for a husband. Women had their own festival at Olympia called Heraia.
There was only one event and that was a running race. It was divided up so that girls and women could run with others of a similar age.
Theodosius suspended the Olympic Games because he was catholic and he believed in one god but the Greeks believed in many gods. In 1896 the modern Olympic Games started again. They are celebrated every 4 years and start when an athlete takes the Olympic torch. He turns it on with fire brought from Olympia.
