Once a week, Tom cleans the house.
"By the zombie"

a passive sentence.
Sam repaired the car.

I can understand and correctly use
active
and
passive
voice in my writing. .

Active Voice
Essential Question

How do I determine if a sentence is in

active
or
passive
voice?

Active voice
In active sentences, the
thing doing the action
is in the subject of the sentence and the thing
receiving the action
is the object.
Passive voice
[
Subject receiving the action
] + [
passive verb
] + [
doing the action
]
[
Thing doing the action
] + [
verb
] + [
thing receiving the action
]
In passive sentences, the
thing receiving the action
is the subject of the sentence and the
thing doing the action
is either included near the end of the sentence or is left off on purpose.
"Brains of the operation"
"The brains of
the operation"

Learning Target
The student will be able to correctly identify
active
and
passive
voice by labeling the subject, object, and the action taking place in each sentence.

To help us proofread!
Our football team was beaten by our rivals.
Shawn was given a medal by the police chief for his bravery.
The gorilla had been given a banana.
In the morning, the children were driven to school by their mom.
Because we liked it so much, that movie was watched three times.

The snake was killed by the man.

The student texted a response to her friend.

The house was destroyed by the tornado.

Sarah was instructed by the teacher to stop talking.

Jose enjoys cooking dinner for his family at least once a week.

Sheila earned an outstanding grade on her essay.

The problem was solved by the technician.

At training class, dogs learn many tricks.

The family went to the beach to enjoy the warm weather.

The candle was extinguished.

Directions:
Number your group’s paper from 11-15.
Rewrite each sentence, changing each from the passive voice to the active voice.

If there is no “doer” of the action, add one.
Example: The package was shipped by a company in Texas.
Answer: A company in Texas shipped the package.

Round 3

Write whether each sentence is in active or passive voice next to the corresponding number.

Key

Directions:
Number your group’s paper from 1-5.
Write whether each sentence is in active or passive voice
next to the corresponding number.

Example: The dog searched for his bone.
Answer: Active Voice

Round 1

Examples:
The bionic eye was created by scientists (passive).
The scientists created the bionic eye (active).
Mistakes were made (passive without clear “doer”).
The performers made mistakes. (active)

Here is how to change a sentence from passive to active voice:

Begin your sentence with the “Brains” of the action.

Sometimes the “brain” is missing and the writer will need
to clarify this by adding a subject to the sentence.

Change the verb to the correct tense form.

Let’s Quickly Review

What is passive voice?

In passive voice the subject (or brains of the operation) is acted upon.

The anatomy book was read by the Zombie.

Anatomy book (subject) is being acted upon (read) by the Zombie.

What is Active Voice?

The zombie served soup.
Zombie (the subject or “brains of the operation”) is doing something (serving soup which is our fence).

In the active voice, the subject performs the action. It is the “brains of the operation”
Use active voice unless you are required or have very specific reasons for doing otherwise.
It clarifies who is performing the action.

Each group must have a captain who will bring the paper to the teacher with its answers. If the group is wrong, the captain returns to the group and the group tries again:
1st place- 3 shots
2nd place – 2 shots
3rd place – 1 Shot
Points for each shot:
Farthest line – 5
Middle line – 3
Closest – 1

The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!
