WHY IS GOOD NUTRITION IMPORTANT?
Good nutrition throughout our life is important
It can help us have better energy, moods and quality of life
Additionally it can help prevent diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease
CONCERNS FOR WOMEN 50+
Women's risk of developing certain types of diseases increase with age:
Cooking for one
Carbohydrates - grain products, starchy vegetables, beans, fruit
Protein - found in animal products (meat, dairy and eggs), legumes, soy beans/tofu
Fats - help with absorption of some nutrients. Consume mainly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.
Calcium and Magnesium- strong bones, decrease blood pressure, metabolic processes, cardiovascular health and diabetes
Potassium - muscle contractions and nerve communications, helps with fluid balance
DECREASING NEED FOR..
Iron - postmenopausal women have a reduced need, risk of hemochromatosis
Omega 3 - Reduction in heart disease risk and arthritis related to effects on inflammation, reduction in triglycerides, and memory loss
