Periodontal maintenance is a non-surgical approach to control periodontal disease. Bacteria re-establishes itself in 3 months after treatment. A 3 month recall is critical to disrupt the bacteria in order to disable the destructive process at its critical stage. The critical stage is when the bacteria does the most harm to the supporting structures, namely the periodontal ligament.
A supportive 3 month recall appointment is not an option but a requirement for successful therapy.
