"Home on the Range."
Composers
This song was first written as a poem by
Dr. Brewster M. Higley.
His friend, Daniel E. Kelley, wrote a melody
to go along with the words of the poem.


The Song's Lyrics
Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard
a discouraging word,
and the skies are not
cloudy all day.
The poem was written in 1873.
It was adopted as the
state song of Kansas
in 1947.
The song was very popular
among cowboys!
History
"Home on the Range"
is the most commonly sung
western song
of all time.
