This is the right way of inculcating inner discipline Students should take Ownership of Problem It is important to believe that students are capable of taking full responsibility of the problems they create Discipline, Punishment and Rewards Punishment discourages student from acknowledging their mistakes as this focus on the pain and blame
Punishment negates the need for student to develop inner discipline
Should not rely on rewards to promote positive behavior as kindness and positive behavior cannot be bought and bartered. Then how do we discipline the student? Four steps of Discipline
Show students what they could have done
Give them as much ownership of the problem as they can handle
Give them options for solving the problem
Leaves their dignity intact If the steps for discipline do not work, Assertive Confrontation can be implemented. When you are angry and upset, speak the message in a straightforward and assertive manner not aggressively.
Tell the other person your feelings
State your belief
Give direct feedback. Tell the person how you feel about the problem
State what you want from the person
Be open to other's perspective on the situation
Negotiate an agreement you both can accept Allow them to experience the consequences of their action If natural consequences of their action is not life threatening, the students should experience it. Eg, if the students kept borrowing things from friends and do not return them, eventually the friends will stop lending things to him
Have the consequences related to the real world consequences and dealt with reality of the situation rather than power and control of adult Tips to help students to develop inner discipline Do not use destructive words that will harm their dignity and self-esteem.
Show appreciation for effort the students had put in to achieve a good outcome rather than praising.
Avoid praise that equates their achievement with their self-esteem this will lead them to view mistakes as a negative reflection of themselves rather than a learning point. Conclusion: Inner discipline can be done by.... Treating students with dignity, care and compassion
