Transcript of How Earthquakes/Volcanoes shape the Earth

How Earthquakes and Volcanoes shape the Earth! We can find Earthquakes along fractures in the Earth's crust called faults. Most faults occur along the edges of major plates. Where can we find Earthquakes? Where can we find volcanoes? Most volcanoes occur at plate boundaries. Almost 90% are in the ring of fire. Why do we find them in these places? We find Earthquakes in these places because stress builds up and is released suddenly in a great burst of seismic waves. These vibrations move through rock causing an earthquake. Also there's a place where the Earthquake started, the epicenter. To locate that you have to have three recording stations and seismic wave measurements. What you need to do is draw a circle with a radius equal to it's distance from the quake. The epicenter is where all three circles intersect. Why do we find Earthquakes in these places? There are many different ways how different volcanoes form. Here's one, an island arc forms when one oceanic plate subducts under another plate. What role does plate tectonics play in earthquakes? Plate tectonics play the part about the seismic waves. Usually plates move very slowly. Sometimes stress builds up and is released in a great burst of seismic waves. What role does plate tectonics play in volcanoes? There are many types of volcanoes, so there are many types of roles that plate tectonics play in volcanoes. As Earth's huge plates move and interact with the lithosphere, they trigger a very slow chain of events that can end very badly. How do volcanoes form igneous rock formations? Volcanoes form igneous rock formations by when they erupt they create mineral deposits. Also hot spots in the ocean create islands, like the Hawaiian islands. How do Earthquakes change rock formations? Earthquakes change rock formations by creating faults and cracks in the Earth. Also they change land formations, when plates collide they get smaller, like India is getting smaller every year. How do Earthquakes change the appearance of Earth's surface? Earthquakes change the appearance of Earth's surface by creating faults and cracks in the Earth. Also, may change land formations. Also, it might destroy nature, like it separated Pangaea. How might volcanoes change the surface of the Earth? Volcanoes might change the surface of the Earth by creating new islands and change rock formations. They also create mineral deposits, fertile soil, and geothermal energy. Mineral deposit
