King Louis XIV The Sun King By Nicole Andriani Pd 3 Little Louis He took the throne before he turned five.Chief Minister Cardinal Jules Mazarin ruled for him until he passed away by that time Louis was 23 and old enough to rule! He spent a lot of time with his mother and that is where he got his interests in theater and the arts from. Of France September 05, 1638 - September 01, 1715

Father: Louis XIII, king of France. Versailles Louis XIV is famous for his palace that took him 20 years to build, the palace of Versailles. Louis Fell in love with Marie Mancini 1672-1678 The Decline: The War Of The Spanish Succession 1701-1714 During this war that Louis XIV led, France and Spain joined together as an alliance against the Holy Roman Empire and its supporters including England, Portugal, and other countries. The war cost France so much that they went into a major debt. The public went from hailing Louis XIV as a hero to blaming him for France’s financial devastation. Created a number of programs to infuse more of the arts into French culture. In 1682 Louis moved his court and government to Versailles. In Louis’s day, people thought a good, thick layer of filth would keep you healthy and strong! Louis loved ballet and during his early half of his reign he frequently danced in court ballets.

He performed 80 roles in 40 major ballets.

He was really passionate about the arts, including ballet, and would combine business with art as much as possible. Ballet! Louis as "The Sun" - balle de la Nuit (1653) -"I am the State" The palace is very large and beautiful with a gorgeous graden. Pictures of Versailles He built it for the arts and so he can always be remembered. Maria Theresa Died in 1683. Louis did not stay faithful to her for long. He took on a series of mistresses after. Amoung them , Francoise d'Aubigne (Madame de Maintenon). He married her as his second wife in 1683 but nobody knew about it. It was a secret marriage. The marriage lasted until his death, for 32 years. Father Mother During this war France and Sweden invaded the Dutch territory. They were quickly able to take over three of seven Dutch provinces.
