The Gramophone 1888 Open Reel to Reel 1948 The first audio tape machines were open reel to reel,and evolved into a wide number of tape widths and track configurations. The 4-track cartridge was the precursor to the 8-track. These were like open reel to reels in a case. 4-Track Cartridge 1962 Audio Formats By: Asa,Bo,and Justin Phonograph 1877 On December 4, 1877 Thomas Edison became the first person to ever record and play back the human voice. Mail Call Letterpack 1967 MP3 1989 In this recording machine Emile Berliner used a flat disk and a stylus which cut a spiral groove that moved up and down. Similar to an 8-track in physical design, it was also an endless loop format but a much smaller size. MP3 is actually a software compression/de-compression algorithm rather than a piece of hardware. MP3 stands for motion picture experts group, audio layer III which defines the codec.
