How intervention can help
Specific need in Larimer County Target Population Elementary aged children (grades K-5) in the Poudre School District who have been previously diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Identified and referred to program by parents, teachers and school professionals. Goals and Objectives Community Event Fund:

(Colorado) Comparison of ASD Frequency 1 in 88 children diagnosed (Centers for Disease Control, 2012) 1 in 85 children diagnosed (Centers for Disease Control, 2012) There is no known cure for Autism, however, research has proven that intervention can improve quality of life. Currently, there are few research based public programs. HABIC is prepared to fill this gap. How HABIC can help:
Social skill improvement, self-confidence and self-esteem, motivation, empathy, attachment (bonding), respect; psychological/emotional needs; behavior control; and gross/fine motor skills (HABIC, 2011) Timetable Human-Animal Bond

Autism Spectrum Disorder Future Funding Teachers and PARA's of each school will evaluate the overall success of the program based on pre- and post-test data collected over each quarter If the assessment demonstrate the effectiveness of the program, the program will then branch out to other school districts across the state of Colorado Once these other school districts collaborate with HABIC, the program fee may decrease Budget Pups for Pawsitive Awareness Walk Total amount requested: $29,461 School Fee: $600 dollars/year per school.

Grant will cover the school fee for every elementary school in the Poudre School District.

32 Schools x $600= $19,200 This dog walk will provide future funding to sustain the program and support the school fees. The walk will be scheduled in April, National Autism Awareness month, furthering the communities knowledge and support for this program The walk will allow the children to walk with their canine companion. Program Coordinator Program Staff Timetable 2013 2014 June/Mid-July Mid-July August October Dog and owner team will complete intensive training for 6 weeks HABIC and Poudre School District will collaborate and determine amount of children to participate Planning: Day and Time of interventions HABIC enters schools first week of class, August 20th *Same human-animal team to visit each session to allow for consistency and strong bonds to be built between child and team Program coordinator analyze first quarter data from each student First Quarter: Intervention weeks 1-9 Dates: August 20th - October 14th January Program coordinator analyze second quarter data from each student Second Quarter: Intervention weeks 10-18 Dates: October 21st-January 6th March Program coordinator analyze third quarter data from each student Dates: January 13th-March 10th Third Quarter: Intervention weeks 19-27 May Program coordinator analyze fourth quarter data from each student Fourth Quarter: Intervention weeks 28-36 Dates: March 24th-May 19th June To determine success of program with each individual child and the program as a whole, data from pre-and-post SSIS test scoring will be analyzed Goal 1: To see a qualitative and quantitative improvement in the social skills of participants within a school environment. Objective 1.1: By calculating a baseline measure of social skills by the week of August 12, 2013, we will be able to compare results to a post test completed in May, 2014. By the end of the school year (36 weeks of therapy) we will see a 30% increase in the social skills of participants. Objective 1.2: Teachers and program coordinator report a significant increase in social skill attainment as measured by pre- and post test data from the Social Skills Intervention System (SSIS) which will be completed by May, 2014 at the end of the final program quarter. Goal 2: To further investigate the bond between children with ASD and the therapy dog. Objective 2.1: 30% of children are willing and comfortable interacting with the canine and dog owner (i.e. petting and approaching animal) by first program quarter (week 9), as compared to baseline assessment of this quality. Measured by the HABIC Bonding Scale and Interview Questions. Objective 2.2: The children significantly improve in their communication and initiation of commands with therapy dog (i.e. sit and heel) by third program quarter (week 12) as compared to baseline assessment of this quality. Measured by HABIC Bonding Scale and Interview Questions. Program Coordinator

CSU graduate with a BS in Human Development and Family Studies, Social Work or Psychology

$10,000 for organization and implementation of program. In-Kind Donations

$6,400 to pay 1 intern/semester $10.00/hr. for up to 320 hours of service.

HDFS, Psychology or Social Work Student. Previous experience with children or animals preferable. We believe that by utilizing HABIC and their creative approaches the overall potential of children with ASD could be endless
