HISTORY OF THE FAMILY FARM SCHOOLS
FRANCE
Dagatan Family Farm School

Balete Family Farm School
" It always starts with the determination of families that decide to change their conditions of life, to increase their autonomy and give real answers to the questions about their children's future and ennvironment they live in."
International level
The beginning of the family farm schools, primarily known as
Maison Familiale Rurale
,

did not start as one big event in France. Rather it developed during one of the conversations between
Jean Peyrat
, a community leader and parent to
Yves
, his son who was already in his pre-adolescent years. He learned from his son that he did not want to continue studying. This alarmed him considering that
he wanted his son to be more competent than he is
.

SON
JEAN PEYRAT
Pa, I think I should stop studying.
What?! But why, Son?
I would like to help you in the farm but studies will only interfere.
But you have to be educated to be a better farmer.
No, Pa! Studying is not for me but farming is!
You have to think better than that.
If my son stops studying, he will become an ignorant farmer
But if I send him to that school, he might end up not wanting to be a farmer.
I better talk to father Granereau about this.
YES!!!
Off to Father Granereau...
Yes, you're right Jean!! Farming along with quality education should be promoted. I also think it is possible that your son studies while working in your family's farm.
I better meet with the Cooperative Officer to discuss this concern.
One Sunday after the Holy Mass...
That's a very good approach!
Let's go for it then.
Learning should be practical.
We have to make sure that the curriculum satisfies the French Educational System.
Father Granereau met with the officers....
Learning was through correspondence and meetings were held at the Parish Convent.
The first tutor was hired.
The learning center was turned into a more formal school.
The alternation system was 1 week in school and 3 weeks in the family farm.
The parents were largely responsible.
The first Family Farm School was established.

As of today, there are hundreds of Family Farm Schools.
