Aech: He is Wade's best friend even though they have never met in real life they share the same interests, the same movies, books, and video games. When we are introduced to Aech it seems like he is a cool guy, but he is hiding huge secret.
Daito/Toshiro Yoshiaki and Shoto/Akihide Karatsu: They are Japanese gunters who work as a team in their quest for the egg. They have an bumpy relationship with Wade, Aech, and Art3mis. The audience doesn’t really get to see Daito because he is killed early on in the story
It's the year 2044, and the real world is not a pretty place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his shady surroundings by spending most of his waking hours logged into OASIS a virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be. Wade dreams of being the one to discover the prize that is hidden amongst the virtual world, James Halliday the creator of the OASIS has hidden a three keys that can only be found by deciphering the complicated riddles that will lead to the massive fortune, but only to the first person who can unlock them. For years, many of people searched only knowing that the riddles were based on the 1980s pop culture and games that he loved, but they always came up unsuccessful. Many people have found this quest an escape from reality, retracting into obsessive study of Halliday's icons. Then, Wade stumbles upon the first key. The whole world is watching, and millions of competitors join the hunt among them are the Sixers, they are powerful players who are lead by the antagonist of the novel Nolan Sorrento and they are willing to commit real murder to beat Wade to the prize.
Exposition: It is reveled to the reader that there is a contest for all the money of the creator of the game, James Halliday hidden somewhere in the game.
Rising Action: Wade is the first person after five years of searching to find the first key to unlocking the prize
Conflict: The conflict is an external conflict that is person vs person between Wade and Nolan Sorrento to find all the keys.
Climax: The climax is when Wade is captured by the Sixers in real life and forced to work for them because he did not pay his internet fee, and how he escapes from the building.
Falling Action: Wade gets to the last gate
Resolution: This would be a spoiler
Nolan Sorrento: He is the antagonist and the head of Innovative Online Industries, also known as IOI, the world's largest internet provider. In an attempt to win the Hunt they employed a vast army of people called the Sixers. They put so much into the hunt because they want to take over the OASIS and start charging people for it.
Art3mis/ Samantha Evelyn Cook: A famous gunter and blogger from Canada. Wade has a huge cyber-crush on her, which is complicated by their competition in search of the egg.
James Halliday: He is the creator of the OASIS he left behind his fortune in an easter egg that is hidden somewhere in the game because he had no loved one's or living family members.
Majority of the book takes place in the OASIS a virtual reality game that is so realistic that it is hard to tell apart from reality. The rest of it takes place in the dystopian year of 2044 and the world is not looking too good because of overpopulation, unemployment, and energy shortages. Due to overpopulation most people now live in the stacks, basically a bunch of trailer homes stacked over one another. There's not even real food available anymore most of the food is freeze dried or powdered .
Wade Watts/Parzival: He is the protagonist 18 year old boy who lives in the stacks (ghetto) of Oklahoma City. We are introduced to this character when he's awakened by gunshots early in the morning as his day goes we learn that both of his parents are dead, his dad died while robbing a grocery store, and his mom died of a drug overdose. Wade lives with his aunt who he dislikes because she doesn't want around she often tells him that he is just a dead weight even though she takes all his food stamps.
Ready Player One
Friendship: Throughout the book there are many examples of friendship between Wade, Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto like when they all have to work together to defeat the entire Sixer army and unlock the final gate
Social Issues: The world is falling apart and majority of the population is poor. The readers knows the world is going through a recession when Wade describes how he is not that poor because he has a roof over his head. The government has give him food stamps this shows that there is no more middle class and everyone is either very poor or extremely rich.
I would give this book a 4.5/5 star rating because the book is very intriguing and makes the reader think about the future and all the problems that we could eventually face. It's also filled with lots of action and adventure. Every aspect that Ernest Cline adds into the story is laid out well, and sucks the reader into the book. I would recommend this to anyone, but especially for 80s geeks. I would not recommend this book for anyone under the age of 12 because it has vulgar language and has some mature subject matter. So if you're into books about dystopian futures and are packed with action then this is the book for you.
