The Spanish Past Tense! By: Kayla Wiley Preterite Verbs! Things you need to know
about Preterite Verbs: Preterite verbs are the PAST tense ("-ed")
it is a completed action. examples of the past tense (in english): I went to the store.
I bought a shirt.
I paid in cash. The Preterite endings for AR-verbs are: é amos

ó aron The Preterite endings for ER/IR-verbs are: í imos

ió ieron Examples of the AR verb endings: Tomar:
(to drink) tomé tomamos
tomaste X
tomó tomaron Hablar:
(to talk) hablé hablamos
hablaste X
habló hablaron Cepillarse:
(to brush) me cepillé nos cepillamos
te cepillaste X
se cepilló se cepillaron **Notice that when there is "se" after the verb
ending that you need to put the reflexsive pronouns befor the verb!!** Examples of the ER/IR verb endings: Comer:
(to eat) comí comimos
comiste X
comió comieron Escribir:
(to write) escribí escribimos

escribió escribieron Revolver:
(to stir) revolví revolvimos

revolvió revolvieron **There are NO STEM CHANGERS in the PAST TENSE!! **Nosotros in the "AR" form: One thing to remember about AR verbs in the preterite form is that the nosotros form will always stay the same. The ending will always be "amos". "CAR" "GAR" & "ZAR" verbs when you have a verb that ends in "car", "gar" or "zar
you need to be watchful of the "yo" form of the verb. The "yo" form of the preterite verb changes to conserve the sound of the infinitive. CAR--> qué
GAR--> gué
ZAR--> cé The Yo form endings for these verbs are: CAR verb example
-Buscar: busqué buscamos

-pagar: pagué pagamos
pagaste X
pagó pagaron ZAR verb example
-almozar: almorcé almorzamos
