What is a Chromebook?
A web browser on an inexpensive laptop
Boots up & shuts down in 5 seconds, and a charge lasts all day
Who's Using Chromebooks?
Thousands in use in my region alone
Beaver, Garfield & Kane are 1:1 in 3rd Grade up
~ 18,000 in Washington County
How is it Different from a Laptop?
No traditional OS
No ‘My Documents’
No software installation, so...
Data, ‘apps’, settings, etc. follow the
, not the device
No Software? So, Web
There isn’t much currently that a student does on a computer these days that is not Web based
Chromebooks will do 90% for 90%
No software means no Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Suite...
Pro or Con?
office Vs. Docs/Drive
Google Drive handles the basics of Office
well, and is being improved constantly
Google Drive thrives on collaboration, and has many features that leverage life online
Revision History, Explore Tool & Links, Document Translation, Integrated Image Search, easy sharing and publishing online…
Drive Document > Paper
Oh, by the way…
Drive for Educational Domains now gives you UNLIMITED storage
Even if you don’t like Docs/Drive, use this for free cloud backup space for all of your documents and files!
So, do we even need Office anymore?
I guess that depends on your needs...
Drive has no built in "Mail Merge*" nor any dancing Christmas tree borders…
...but you have true file format freedom with File --> Download as...
Once you understand the basics of sharing and collaboration in Drive, Google Classroom will make working with student documents and assignments a snap!
