The Kennedy and Johnson Years The Election of 1960 John Kennedy was 43 years old, and many qusetioned whether if he had the experience needed to be president. Kennedy became president with a narrow victory. With this narrow victory he entered office with out strong mandate. Kennedy's Domestic Problems Kennedy's Doemestic problems Kennedy proposed a large tax cut to help end the economic problems. A mandate is a public endorsment expressed to a canidate by voters. Kennedy's New Fontier was to help improve the economy, assist the poor, and speed up the space program. Kennedy successful with the space program when NASA was created. After Kennedy's assaination LBJ becomes president of the United States. Johnsons agenda included Kennedy's civilrights unit and tax-cut bills. Johnson had a land slide victory over Barry Goldwater in 1964. Immigratoin Act of 1965 cut limits in imigration. The Bay of Pigs invasion took place on April 17, 1961. The invasion had failed. The Berlin wall was built in 1961 to seperate communist Berlin and non-communist Berlin. During the Cuban missile crisis Khrushchev sent Kennedy a letter asking him to remove the quarantine. Also in 1961 Kennedy had created the Peace Corps which sought to educate and develope nations around the world.
