Transcript of 2010 Teacher Induction Colloquium and Celebration

What is DECA? 2010 Teacher Induction Colloquium and Celebration It is An Association of Marketing Students Or formally known as
Distributive Education Clubs of America Over the past two years as a business teacher and DECA advisor I have had
the privilage of giving students opportunities that they would have never had without the DECA program. DECA students must have a job and work a minimum of 15 hours per week.

They have to take or have taken:
* Marketing
* Entrepreneurship
* Merchandising
* Sales
* Marketing Co-Op

Attend leadership conferences

Compete at the state level by taking written exams, participate in role play situations and write business plans and or marketing research papers.
The ultimate goal for a DECA student is to qualify for the National Conference. Here they compete against other states and countries for scholarships. Last year I took two students to Aneheim, CA and this year I took two students to Louisville, Ky. The big DECA community service project was to create an Iowa DECA cookbook. All Iowa DECA chapters provided recipes to create the book. The Burlington Chapter was able to give $600 to Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy.
No, it's not just donuts.
The Burlington DECA Chapter participated in the Hospice House Fun Run/Walk at GRMC. It was a Beautiful day and a GREAT cause! The single most important thing I learned in my first two years of teaching - Is that as teachers we need to first build relationships then teach!!!

I want every student that I come in contact with to feel as if they are "special" and to know that I care about them as a person as well as my student.
