Gray Squirrels The Gray Squirrel usually has the colors of brown, gray, black, and white. Female squirrels are pregnant for about 6 weeks before giving birth. A female gray squirrel usually has 1 litter a year or 2 depending if there is enough food around the area.

Gray squirrels stay in nests, made of many branches, leaves, and sticks, bark and more types of wood and tree parts. They spend most of their time in their nests during winter. They usually don't hibernate. All squirrels eat nuts, seeds, bark, buds, fruit, and insects. Sometimes, if they really need food, they eat bird eggs. The animals squirrels fear are foxes, weasles, owls, hawks, snakes, and cats. Foods Enemies Appearance Living Young Mates Female squirrels mate with male squirrels in order to produce babies. Courtship includes noisy chattering, tail flicking, and chasing. Several male rivals usually compete for a female. The first male to arrive starts the chase. This can last all day until the female signals her directions with a low 'tuk, tuk' noise and then the winner comes up and the rivals leave without a fight. A mother suckles her young for 8 to 10 weeks. She has 8 nipples, so that all the babies can suck at the same time. When the young cry, the mother always answers. A squirrel usually has more than one nest. If they don't, and their own nest gets destroyed, they go and stay with another squirrel.
