A short time later, India's Supreme Court said that she was not guilty. But she lost the election in 1977. After losing the election, she formed a new party. Gandhi became prime minister again in 1980. She served as prime minister until her death in 1984, when she was killed by two of her guards ndira Gandhi (1917-1984) was the only child of Kamla and Jawaharlal Nehru. She spent part of her childhood in Allahabad, where the Nehrus had their family residence, and part in Switzerland, where her mother Kamla convalesced from her periodic illnesses. She received her college education at Somerville College, Oxford. Indira's government faced major problems after her tremendous mandate of 1971 Gandhi moved to restore order by ordering the arrest of most of the opposition participating in the unrest. Her Cabinet and government then recommended that President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declare a state of emergency, because of the disorder and lawlessness following the Allahabad High Court decision.
