Have fun learning - Let's sweat the "small" stuff! The Atom Timeline :) In 1808, using reasoning Dalton was able to conduct experiments which were conducted in England, results stated the following.
All matter was made of atoms, atoms of a given element were all different from all other atoms, three types of atoms exist: simple (elements), compound (simple molecules), and complex (complex molecules). Atoms cannot be created divided or destroyed. His model changed when he found electrons which hover around the nucleus. He proved that atoms ARE divisible. Thompson concluded that the measure of the charge in the cathode to their mass was always the same regardless the metal the cathode was made of. And chemistry book! JJ Thompson In 1911, New Zealander Rutherford discovered that the atom had a nucleus of positive protons and negative electrons. In the experiment he fired a beam of alpha particles at a thin metal foil. Rutherford figured out that in the very center of an atom there is a densely packed bundle of matter he later called the nucleus He said that the force inside the atom must have been positive. He also said that if the nucleus was the size of a marble the area around it or electron cloud was the size of a football field!!!! However he could not explain how the electrons stayed in place. RUTHERFORD 1913, Proposed the theory that electrons orbit the nucleus without losing energy. They can only move in fixed orbit. Low energy electrons are closer to the nucleus than electrons with higher energy. In his experiments based on the wavelengths of the hydrogen's line emission he was able to calculate the energy levels of the electrons in an hydrogen atom. After Niels discovery he concluded that atoms have Electrons that have a uniform path around the nucleus. Niel solved the mystery of the Hydrogen atom. We still use his atom today.
