Practical Team Sports / Rules, Regulations & Officiating Assignment 2: Rules and Regulations of Team Sports (P2, M2). Assignment 1: The Rules, Laws and Regulations of a Selected Sport and the Roles and Responsibilities of Officials
(P1, P2, P3, M1). Today we going to unite two units which ask for evidence of knowldege and understanding that can be replicated in both, what does this mean for you? It means you will have to produce one less piece of coursework, which can submitted for both units The two assignments are as follows: WALT - Research the rules of two team sports: Students will investigate and develop an understanding of the rules and regulations of two team sports including the unwritten rules and/or etiquette specific to each sport. What is the difference between the three key words which make up the grading criteria, investigate? Rules, Laws, Regulations

In 2's or 3's you will provide a definition for each, which clearly describes the differences between them and provide an example from a sport chosen by DJL for each one

Vocational Context –
Sport is constantly developing rules and regulations to improve the experience for participants, to provide spectators with greater enjoyment and, often, to provide the media with greater levels of excitement.

Governing bodies have realised that the more exciting their sport is, the more popular and marketable it is. When sports do become more popular, it is often the case that more people look to participate in the sport at a competitive level. Due to rule changes, sports have become faster and Governing bodies have begun to look to the younger generations to start officiating as early as possible, and build up their experience as match officials
Scenario –

Professional referees / officials are under so much scrutiny and receive so much abuse, especially in football, that it is having a negative effect on the number of officials at grass roots level. Sport England & a national newspaper has backed the ‘Respect the Ref’ campaign and part of their support for the campaign aims to improve the public’s knowledge and understanding of the rules, laws & regulations of various sports.

You have been asked to write a pull-out spread for the news paper detailing the rules, laws and regulations of two team sports and how they would be applied in a game situation.

Task: Below is a letter which has been sent to you regarding the article you have been asked to write by the national newspaper.
Dear A. Student,

Thank you for agreeing to be the guest writer for the National Observer during our support for the ‘Respect the Ref’ campaign I’m sure you will agree it is a pressing issue across all levels of sport in the UK.
The pull-out article we would like you to write aims to improve our reader’s knowledge and understanding of the rules and regulations of sports and the difficult jobs officials have in applying them. The article must be attractive to gain the attention of the readers, informative and where possible should use real-life examples/scenarios.
Thanks and I look forward to receiving your first draft.

Kind regards

Sally Johnston
(Sports Editor of National Observer)
Friday / Tuesday Task

Today's Focus - Tuesday 18/10

WALT
Students will develop an understanding of how the rules and regulations within sport are applied depending upon the situation and the circumstances surrounding it.

PLTS
Creative Thinkers 5 - Try out alternatives or new solutions and follow ideas through

Effective Participators 5 - Try to influence others, negotiating and balacing diverse views to reach workable solutions

Outcomes / Levels
ALL - P2 / P3 Describe rules and regs applied to three different situations for each sport

MOST - M1/M2 Explain the application of the rules and regulations, of two different team sports, in three different situations for each sport

What constitutes a situation in sport, that requires the application of rules?

Lets look at a few! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/international/wales/8829099/Rugby-World-Cup-2011-Sam-Warburtons-red-card-was-strong-refereeing-and-spot-on.html Rightly or wrongly Sent off? What does the situation dictate? Basketball

When free throws are awarded?

There are many situations when free throws can be awarded:

The first and most common is when a player is fouled while in the act of shooting. If the foul causes the player to miss the shot, the player receives two or three free throws depending on whether the shot was taken in front of or behind the three-point line. If, despite the foul, the player still makes the attempted shot, the number of free throws is reduced to one, and the basket counts. This is known as a three-point or four-point play, depending on the value of the made basket. Commentators sometimes refer to a successful three-point play as "an old-fashioned three-point play", "a three pointer the hard way" because before the advent of the three-point shot, this was the only way to earn three points on one play, or "And 1", because they made the shot and will get one free throw.

What happens in basketball when a foul is awarded in the act of shooting?

Do you know? Finally what about this one? Today's Task 18/10
You are asked to identify three situations for each of the two sports you have been describing in your article and provide examples of three possible scenarios that might occur in the game and provide an explanation of how the rules of the game would be applied to each situation and how the interpretation might change depending upon players and officials reaction.
