Transcript of Long, Long after School

Characterization
Wes
is a black man, maybe in his 20's or 30's (doesn't say in the story). He thinks Miss Tretheway was the most amazing woman in the world, he constantly talked, and still talks about how he thinks she's so beautiful. He also seems to think about how he got bullied a lot as a kid because of his race. Miss Tretheway dies, and he did not attend her funeral, but he simply sent flowers instead. Whenever people talked to Wes they thought that he was a bit self-conscious. They always thought he was a guy that hated everything but turns out he wasn't.

Wes is a developing character because at the begining of the story he seemed pretty low down because Miss Tretheway died, and he really enjoyed her company and really liked her. But when the story continues he starts becoming more open and happy because he remembers how much Miss. T made him happy and how she was so beautiful.



Miss Tretheway
was a white old lady, maybe in her 60-70's. She was a third grade teacher, and taught Wes when he was in grade 3. She died in her sleep the night before she was going to be teaching for 50 years. Wes was the student that always admired her for everything she did and loved her. Miss T always made him happy with the little things she did.

Miss Tretheway had a static personality because she was that stereotypical happy, nice old lady, that always had a kind soul. We don't really know what her personality was like, besides what Wes always said about her.
Conflict
In the text Long, Long After School. By Ernest buckler, Wes finds himself deep down, loving his third grade teacher who is very old named Miss Tretheway she much too old for Wes, and yet Wes found her beautiful.
Not from the outside as he mentions (Pg 113-115) he loved her because of how she would help him either from bullies which sparked his fuse, and yet he calmly ignored it and even lied to Miss Tretheway that they were just playing.
Yet Miss Tretheway knew of his lies, she would take him for either treatment or to the principals’ office to work out things.
Either way Wes found himself in love with his former teacher as he explains to one of his friends later on in his life. This is the past where when Miss Tretheway died in her sleep, as she was getting very old.
So for whom he had much love, and gratitude for always being there for him, he went to go pick flowers for her grave (“a corsage of simple flowers” Pg. 115) . Wes later gets rather upset when the protagonist asks him that he “must be joking, right?”(Pg. 115) showing that no one accepts Wes’s feelings towards Miss Tretheway.
Setting
The setting of this story takes place in December at the cemetery where Miss Tretheway (the teacher) was buried. The setting is very important because it where Wes Holman and the chairman (main character) meet again and talk about Miss Tretheway, while in the process Wes also tells his personal feelings about her. It is also where Wes works.

I think the dramatic irony in the text is that; since Wes liked Ms. Tretheway, it was very weird to hear that. Liking a 60 year old teacher, when she's dead, and when you're a lot younger than she is, is not something you often hear these days. But in that time period, I guess stuff like that happened all the time. If that happened in this generation it would be very out of the blue and random.

Imagery:

Imagery is definitely present as throughout the whole story you picture the scenes. The writer uses very descriptive words that help your imagination picture the scenes. [A corsage of simple flowers, such as a young boy sends his girl for her first formal dance](p.113) This quote is an example of how the author uses descriptive words and examples to help us picture what the corsage may actually look like in our imaginations.
Dramatic Irony:
MOOD
The mood of this story is very pitiful and sad. Moreover, the setting is definitely one of the main factors of this. In the short story Wes say's "You can hardly see it now. But I almost bled to death right there. I guess I might have, if it hadn't been for Miss Tretheway."(p.115) This brief quote is an indicator of how the readers felt pitiful and sad for Wes and Miss Tretheway, therefore creating the mood.
I ran into Wes Holman te very day I was collecting for Miss Tretheway's flowers. But it never came into my head to ask him for a contribution.Miss Tretheway had taught grade three in our town for exactly fifty years. She had died in her sleep.
When Wes is explaining why Miss Tretheway is beautiful in her own way. How she helped him out through school, and saved his life.
When the narrator realizes how judgemental and ignorant the chairman is, and he sees that Miss Tretheway is a beautiful person and how much she helped Wes.
When Wes finishes telling his story about Miss Tretheway, how great of a person she is.
My curiosity was quite satisfied. But somehow I myself had never felt less beautiful, or never less of a gentlemen.
Sattire:
Wes is our local "character". His tiny house up behind the ballpark is furnished with almost nothing but books
