SFC CLP Talk 4:
Repentance & Faith
“The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news” - Mark 1:14-15
What is Repentance?
To repent, in relation to salvation, is to change your mind in regard to Jesus Christ.
Repentance & Faith
"Two sides of the same coin"
Repentance and faith go together. It is a double‑action response. We cannot just have one without the other.
It is impossible to place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Saviour without first changing your mind about who He is and what He has done.
The Two Ways
1. We need to believe in Him and His plans and promises.

2. Faith necessarily needs to be connected to morality. (Faith without works is dead)
It is not just a simple confession of wrongdoing. Rather, it refers to a change in direction.
So what do we do to REPENT?
Looking at it in God's way - The Six Steps of Repentance
Be Honest
Exercise Humility
Renounce Sin
Call a spade a spade. If it is sin, do not call it a "growth experience"
Be willing to change ...... Be willing to receive help..... from the Lord to Change
Actively turn away from sin and decide not to do it again
Ask God's forgiveness
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)
Sacrament of
Receive Forgiveness
"Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more." (Doctrine & Covenant 58:42)
Specific sins we need to renounce
Involvement by a Christian in a non-Christian religions
Spiritualism and the occult
Sexual wrongdoing (e.g. sexual intercourse, outside marriage, adultery and active homosexuality)
Serious crimes (e.g. murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, corruption etc.,)
Drunkness and getting stoned on drugs.
God warns us not to 'look back'
"It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them." (2 Peter 2:21-22)
God's gift that goes with Repentance
"You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." (Psalms 16:11)
Faith is both belief in the messenger, Jesus, and the message that He brings
Faith is a personal ACT and decision
a definite act
an individual act
deliberate act
urgent act
indispensable act
just a feeling
just a wishful thinking
based on illusions or personal desires
blind leap
God's Promise to Us
A promise of salvation from sin, Satan & death
A promise of forgiveness and eternal life with God
(Acts 16:31)
A promise of new life in the Spirit
We can pray for a greater release of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives (Luke 11:9-13)
What repentance is not
It is not dependent on feelings.
It is not being sorry for sin because we are afraid of the consequences.
