Manatees Total number of manatee deaths has been rising over the years In 2009, there were more than 400 Manatee deaths, of which close to 100 were due to boat strikes About 25% of all Manatee deaths are from humans This number can be 0 with a little effort on Florida's behalf There are only around 3800 Manatees left 2009 set a new record number of Manatee deaths They were one of the first species to be labeled "endangered" under the Federal Endagnered Species Act of 1973 The problem: Manatees are very slow moving and nearly blind Boaters have a hard time seeing manatees under water, and even when they are near the surface Some people think adding things like protectors over propellor blades might help Easy solution: Raise awareness "Save the Manatees" Remind people of the problem and it can be avoided Additions can be costly and inconvenient
