Pearls of Wisdom in To Kill a Mockingbird
"No matter what anybody says to you, don't let them get your goat." Ch. 9
Atticus is speaking to Scout in this quote. This quote is important to the novel because it supplies an example of how Atticus incorporates his own morals into the way he raises his children. This quote is important in my own life because this is the way i was raised. The quote simply means do not let people get to you because people will always try to get to you. This is important in our society because today we result to violence almost automatically.

"People in there right minds never take pride in their talents." Ch. 10
Ms. Maudi is speaking to Jem and Scout. This quote is important to the novel because the quote explains that if you are good there is no need to brag. This is important in my life as well as society because talented people are constantly losing respect due to their narcissistic attitude.

“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing."
Scout is narrating in this quote. This quote is important to the novel because it shows Scout's maturity. This quote is meaningful to myself and society because we often take simple things for granted and do not know what we have until it is gone.

"'The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience.'" (pg.120, Ch.11)
This quote is Atticus speaking to Scout about Tom Robinson. This quote is important in the book because it depicts Atticus' compassionate personality. In society and often in my own life we ignore our conscience because we listen to the people around us.

“I raise up my voice-not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back.”

"One time Atticus said you never really knew a man until you stood in his shoes and walked around in them; just standin' on the Radley porch was enough."
In this quote Scout is narrating. This quote is important in the book because it illustrates an important theme in the novel; a person should not be judged before you have taken the time to know him/her. I think this quote should be important to anyone's life and to today's society because people judge at first sight and are judged themselves at first sight as well.

Pearls of Wisdom from Research Sources

There is nothing gutsier to me than a person announcing that their story is one that deserves to be told, especially if that person is a woman. As hard as we have worked and as far as we have come, there are still so many forces conspiring to tell women that our concerns are petty, our opinions aren't needed, that we lack the gravitas necessary for our stories to matter. -Lena Dunham
