Transcript of Hospital's Fast & Secure Authentication System on Mobile Devices

Mobile, Fast and Secure
Hospital
Authentication System

WiFi networks and
Mobile Devices
are part of most Hospitals Infrastructures

Mobile Devices are used to register Drugs and Clinic Material consumptions

Shared use of
Mobile Devices

raises
Security Issues

and is
Time Consuming

Users spend too much time authenticating in Mobile Devices
Consecutive insertion of access credentials in the authentication process (professional’s rotativity)
Users may not logout, subsequent drugs consumptions registrations are made with the credentials of the previous user, which compromises drugs administration traceability

System that automatically logs in / logs out the user just by approaching / moving away from the mobile device

Use existing WiFi infrastructure
To
give a new ID card
to each user, with a WiFi Tag
Use Real Time Location System (RTLS) with RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication), Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) and Trilateration methods to determine with more accuracy the nurse's and mobile device's location
When the proposed system detects that the user is next to the mobile device, it
automatically logs him in

When the system detects that the user is moving away from the mobile device, it
automatically logs him out

agility to access
the applications
Log in time may be nonexistent:
average Log in time decreases significantly.
Increases security to applications access.
Increases security in drugs administration, preventing the drugs consumptions to be registered as have been made by the previous logged in user
User's satisfaction levels increase
System uses RTLS with a combination of RSSI, TDoA and Trilateration algorithms do increase accuracy in determining the WiFi Tag and Mobile Device location.

The user is automatically
logged in
, just by approaching the mobile device.

For increasing the access security, user must insert is password on a defined time interval
Time of Arrival
Time Difference of Arrival
Received Signal Strength Indicator
System matches user's and mobile device's location, by reading AP data on the connect devices and treating that data, using the mentioned optimization location algorithms.

If the match is accurate (user and mobile device are at the same coordinates), the user is automatically logged in in the application.

If not
, the user is prompt to insert is log in credentials.

Although inserting a private password is, in theory, a stronger authentication process, most users use a weak password or give it to know to third parties.
Users must always carry the
ID Card
. In case of losing it, the user must immediately inform the HR department, so it can be disabled.
The signal of the user or the mobile device may not be detected (signal noise, obstacles in signal trajectory), or more than one user are detected to be near the device.

experimentation

Without any infrastructure investment, it is possible to locate 2 mobile devices and to know if they are close to each other, just by using and treating AP data regarding the connect users.

This will allow our system to interact with the drugs and clinical material consumption Application, to automatically log in or log out the user
Implement our System
on an infirmary
Measure log in times before and after this system implementation, and prove that the log in time decreases

Improve location accuracy by applying more accurate location algorithms (highly dependable of the physical space)

Evaluate user's satisfaction level after this system implementation and compare it to the results of the initial survey
We would like to thank our teachers António Pereira and Catarina Silva for their guidance, expertise and availability which contributed for this investigation and results obtained
